The Little Humpbacked Horse is a modern ballet filmed at the Bolshoi Theater and starring Maya Plisetskaya as the Queen Maiden and dancer Vladimir Vasilyev as Ivan. Ivan is a good-hearted soul who acquires three horses, and one of them is the humpbacked horse (danced by Anya Scher Binina). Ivan's disreputable brothers steal two of his three horses, but Fate leaves Ivan with the humpbacked animal, exactly the horse that can bring him good luck. Thanks to equine guidance, Ivan is able to stop his brothers from selling off the two stolen horses to the king, but at the same time, the king asks Ivan if he can please find the Queen Maiden -- setting him off on an adventure that allows for impressive leaps and pirouettes. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Meant for ballet aficionados, Swan Lake is a routinely filmed performance of the Bolshoi Ballet with no additional footage or subplots. Chief ballerina Maya Plisetskay emotively dances the part of Odette, the Queen of the Swans, the woman who will be doomed to take on the form of a swan unless she can find her true love. Nicolai Fadeyechev dances Prince Siegfried, the Queen's counterpart, equally looking for his own true love. Will the potential lovers meet? Not if the Evil Spirit (Vladimir Levashev) has anything to say about it. He wants to keep Odette under his spell, forever. Unfortunately, the camera is not always where it should be in tracking the performers, there is a color shift, and other flaws render the film less than equal to the performance itself. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The music of Tschaikovsky and B. S. Asafiev dominates the soundtrack of the Soviet dance documentary Stars of the Russian Ballet. Those stars include such luminaries as Galina Ulanova, N. M. Sergeyev, M. M. Plisteskaya and N. M. Dudinskaya. Three concert pieces are offered, beginning with the proven favorite "Swan Lake." The second piece, "Fountain of Bakhchisari," is the best of the program, while the third, "Flames of Paris," is the least effective. Director G. Rappaport films Stars of the Russian Ballet with a minimum of camera trickery, which is as it should be in this instance. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
