It took seven years and $2.5 million to film this British modernization of The Changeling (c. 1623) by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley. With period costumes by Elizabeth Emanuel (designer of Princess Di's wedding dress) and scenes of modern-day Spain, the film mixes past and present. Alsemero (Colm O Maonlai) from Valencia loves Alicante's Beatrice (Amanda Ray-King), who's due to marry Alonso (Guy Williams). De Flores (Ian Dury) wants to deflower Beatrice, so when she asks him to kill Alonso, he asks for a payment in sex. The situation gets steamier and riskier when Beatrice has her virginal maid (Julia Tarnoky) slip between the sheets with Alsemero as a wedding-night substitute. In this drama, Barney Ingram (Mickey Rooney) is a gambler who's lost his money, only to discover his favorite horse Lightning has been stolen. A young woman with severe vision problems named Stephanie (Isabel Lorca) is the only one able to ride Lightning to a sure victory. A group of tough-talking gangsters have taken the horse but suggest some kind of a deal can be cut. We'll wager that King Frat was not precisely this film's original title. True, most of the story takes place in fraternity house. With too much time on their hands, the frat brothers decide to stage a farting contest. Whoever wins this aromatic competition will be crowned as King.......you've got it. The overall level of humor was indicated by the character names: John DiSanti plays Grossout, Ray Mann appears as Splash, and so forth. Deadman's Curve is a made-for-TV biography concerning "California sound" rock-n-rollers Jan and Dean. Richard Hatch plays Jan Berry, while Bruce Davison is seen as Dean Torrence. The meat of the story is Jan's grueling efforts to fully recover from a disastrous 1966 auto accident. The film's most powerful scene occurs when the still-shaky Jan attempts a concert comeback, only to be booed offstage when the audience realizes that he's lip-synching.
