In the early '60s, revolutionary music producer and promoter Harold Leventhal's contributions to the American folk scene forever changed the face of modern music. In addition to being the man who gave Bob Dylan his first major concert hall performance, Leventhal also managed such folk legends as the Weavers, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Arlo Guthrie. In this tribute film to Leventhal, named after director Jim Brown's 1982 documentary The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time!, filmmaker Brown weaves interview footage with Arlo Guthrie and other longtime folk specialists in with footage from Leventhal's 2003 Thanksgiving weekend concert at Carnegie Hall. In addition to offering live performance footage of Peter, Paul, and Mary and The Weavers, this tribute concert also features performances by Leon Bibb, Theodore Bikel, Tao Rodriguez-Singer, Sarah Lee Guthrie, and Johnny Irion. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Few if any acts that emerged from the early '60s folk music boom enjoyed the popular acclaim and lasting impact of Peter, Paul and Mary. With their crisp harmonies and superlative ear for songs that entertained while expressing a message, the trio represented the restless but ambitious spirit of the 1960s while maintaining their activist credentials and musical integrity into the 21st century. Peter, Paul and Mary: Carry It On -- A Musical Legacy is a documentary (produced for public television with the group's participation) that combines newsreel footage of the group in their prime with recent interviews and performances to deliver a full portrait of the group's professional career and personal mission. Songs include "If I Had a Hammer," "Lemon Tree," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Wedding Song (There Is Love)," "Blowin' in the Wind," "The Great Mandala (The Wheel of Life)," and many more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

More than any of their contemporaries in the early '60s folk boom, Peter, Paul & Mary sought (on their own terms) to bring socially responsible music to as many different audiences as possible, and, in 1969, shortly before the group broke up for several years, they released the album Peter, Paul & Mommy, in which they performed a variety of folk songs from contemporary songwriters created with children in mind. In 1993, the reunited Peter, Paul & Mary revisited this concept with Peter, Paul & Mommy Too, a live album and video in which the trio performed a baker's dozen tunes, both old and new, with special appeal for younger listeners. Selections include "Puff (The Magic Dragon)," "I Know an Old Lady (Who Swallowed a Fly)," "Pastures of Plenty," and "Garden Song." ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
