Clark Johnson's big-screen adaptation of the 1970s television series S.W.A.T. stars Colin Farrell as Jim Street, a young special weapons and tactics team member who, in the film's opening sequence, is demoted after his hothead partner Jeremy Renner shoots a hostage while trying to kill her captor. In need of good press, the higher-ups call in SWAT expert Hondo Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson) to put together an elite team that can bring some luster back to the badge. He chooses Street, veteran T.J. (Josh Charles), and tough single mother Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez). The new team survives a series of tests before hitting the streets. Their first big assignment involves transporting an international criminal (Olivier Martinez) to federal authorities. The criminal had offered a hundred million dollars to anyone who can bust him out. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

With 1985's Pacific Inferno action star Jim Brown made a triumphant return to movies. Or did he? If you read the copyright date carefully, you'll discover that this US-Philippine coproduction was actually shot in 1977. The plot has us believe that General Douglas MacArthur ordered that $16 million in silver be sent to the bottom of Manila Bay before the Philippines were overtaken by the Japanese in 1942. Navy divers Brown and Ric Van Nutter are among several POWs ordered to retrieve the money. Brown is all for escaping, but the duplicitous Van Nutter plans to abscond with the booty. Thus, Brown is alone in his efforts to round up local guerillas to help his fellow divers get away. Among the resistance fighters is buxom Wilma Reading, whose role consists of falling out of her blouse at the slightest provocation. Less attractive is "special guest star" Richard Jaeckel, who plays a soldier of fortune named Dealer. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

An interesting (if extremely violent) twist on the standard blaxploitation formula, this crime film deals with a black militant-group, led by Charles P. Robinson, whose members decide to clean up their Watts neighborhood by ridding it of white gangsters. Extreme mayhem follows, with slimy Caucasian hoodlums being castrated, shot, and flung from windows, but the black heroes begin overstepping their authority. Soon, they are no better than the mobsters and are even goose-stepping and chanting Nazi slogans, leading the community to revolt. Rod Perry stars, and cult pin-up queen Uschi Digart can be seen as a prostitute. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

During a tense hostage crisis, Hondo (Steve Forrest) sustains a slight bullet wound near his temple. At first he insists upon continuing his duties, but before long he is plagued with headaches, dizziness, and near-blindness. Forced to take a leave of absence, Hondo reluctantly leaves the SWAT team in the hands of prickly Lt. Cameron Mitchell guest stars as police officer Bo Pritchard, a Vietnam War buddy of SWAT team leader Hondo Harrison (Steve Forrest). When team member Deacon Kay is sidelined by an injury, Bo begs Hondo to let him join the unit. Hondo agrees, even though he hasn't forgotten that Bo was a reckless hotshot back in Nam, whose insistence upon being a lone warrior frequently imperiled the lives of his fellow soldiers. What Hondo doesn't know, until it is almost too late, is that the troubled Bo is an emotional ticking bomb. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The SWAT team scours the city in search of an elusive assassin named Bravo (Christopher George). Although under normal circumstances the situation would be tense, indeed (the life of a prominent senator is at stake), and on this occasion the team is racing against time in more ways than one: Unbeknownst to himself, Bravo has contacted a deadly and highly contagious disease. Sal Mineo guest stars as Joey Hopper, the Manson-like head of a Satanist cult known as the Butcher Brigade. Escaping from a prison hospital ward with the help of his "family," Hopper swears vengeance against all the jury members that found him guilty of murder. The SWAT team's efforts to track down Hopper are stymied by obstreperous underground-newspaper publisher Ross Collins (William Windom), who might not be so sympathetic toward Hopper if he knew that his own daughter Judy (Belinda Balaski) aided in the cult leader's bloody escape. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The S.W.A.T. team is saddled with Meredith Cooper (Darleen Carr), a beautiful but obnoxious reporter from an anti-establishment alternative newspaper. Intent on exposing examples of police brutality, she wangles departmental approval to tag along with the team during the next few days. This, of course, does not sit well with team leader Hondo (Steve Forrest), who is having enough trouble tracking down a particularly vicious band of thieves and kidnappers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The heroes in The Black Godfather are members of an African-American criminal organization. Like Brando in The Godfather, they're not averse to robbery and murder, but they do draw the line at narcotics.
