The plot complications begin when Sr. Bertrille contemplates taking to the air to prevent low-flying planes from interfering with an outdoor rededication ceremony at Convent San Tanco. Unfortunately, the guest of honor is the Mother General-and Sr. Bertrille had promised to remain grounded druing her visit. Fed up with his humdrum existence, Howard Sprague decides to kick over the traces and leave Mayberry for good. He heads to the Caribbean, where he has elected to become a carefree beachcomber. Before long, however, Howard realizes that a life without responsibilities can have its disadvantages-and besides, he misses his old friends. Featured in the supporting cast are Harry Dean Stanton and Calypso singer Sir Lancelot. Los Angeles is being terrorized by the "rattlesnake bandit", who preys upon young couples, pointlessly beating them up after robbing them (one of his female victims is now permanently blind). Descriptions of the bandit are fragmentary, but Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) have one palpable clue to go on: the criminal is occasionally seen in the company of a blonde female. Though the bandit manages to elude the cops for several nights running, he finally outsmarts himself when he holds up his girlfriend's ex-boss.
