The revelation that Izzie (Katherine Heigl) once gave up a daughter for adoption is a challenge which George (T. R. Knight) is willing to face, or so he thinks. Down in the dumps over her vacillating relationship with Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) must also contend with her stepmother Susan (Mare Willingham). Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Burke (Isaiah Washington) have trouble summoning enthusiasm over their impending marriage as long as Colin (Roger Rees) remains on the scene. Alex (Justin Chambers) is convinced that he has found the family of the beleagured "Jane Doe" (Elizabeth Reaser). Derek's sister Nancy (Embeth Davidtz) pays a visit for the express purpose of giving him Hell about the "slutty" Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), all the while blissfully ignorant of Addison's infidelity. Cristina (Sandra Oh) inspires envy when she helps perform a rare cardiac autotransplantation (aka the Humpty Dumpty procedure), but her actions just before surgery serve only to arouse suspicions about Burke (Isaiah Washington). Addison (Kate Walsh) and George's (T.R. Knight) pregnant patient Noelle (Liza Lapira) is in a strange predicament: she has two uteruses, and one of her babies is growing faster than the other, indicating that she's been unfaithful to at least one of the fathers. Returning early from maternity leave, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is anxious to repay a favor to Addison (Kate Walsh) by treating her for a delicate "feminine" problem. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) grows ever fonder of heart-transplant patient Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), much to the dismay of Alex (Justin Chambers). After spending the night (and morning) together, George (T.R. Knight) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) can't stop quarrelling at the workplace; and in a later development, George falls downstairs--and into the hands of attractive orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) in her first series appearance). The arrival of Mark Sloan serves only to remind Derek (Patrick Dempsey) of why he broke up with Addison. Season Two of Grey's Anatomy picks up exactly where Season One left off, with the unexpected arrival at Seattle Grace Hospital of brilliant surgeon Addison Shepherd (Kate Walsh)--much to the dismay of Addison's estranged husband Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), to say nothing of Derek's current amour, surgical intern Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). Naturally, Meredith feels betrayed by Derek, and keeps on feeling that way throughout the rest of the episode. Meanwhile, chief of surgery Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) recovers from his operation with the special help of intern George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), who has been appointed official bearer of gossip from the hospital; and Meredith's friend and coworker Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) has big news for her boss Dr. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington)--and vice versa.
