Established in 1905 for the encouragement and nurturing of young talent, the New York-based conservatory Juilliard has boasted such stellar alumni as Kevin Kline, Wynton Marsalis, Robin Williams, Christopher Reeve, Christine Baranski, Laura Linney, and Kelsey Grammer -- not to mention such distinguished instructors as Walter Damrosch and John Houseman. Produced in conjunction with a book about the celebrated conservatory, this two-hour TV documentary focuses on four contemporary Juilliard students: Jeffrey Carlson (acting), Abdur-Rahim Jackson (dance), Elizabeth Morgan (piano), and Sarah Wolfson (voice). In fine PBS tradition, the footage of the chosen foursome studying, practicing, succeeding, and sometimes falling short of their goals is counterbalanced with interviews of famous Juilliard grads (as well as some current celebrities who were unceremoniously invited to leave the conservatory). In the documentary program Itzhak Perlman: In the Fiddler's House, maestro violinist Perlman carries audiences on a 55-minute exploration of klezmer music, as a vital expression of Yiddish culture in several international cities - from the Big Apple to Krakow, Poland. He then discusses at length how klezmer music actually functions as an amalgam of several other Eastern European cultural identities. A number of Jewish guest stars appear and lend support, including character actor Fyvush Finkel (Picket Fences) and the late Red Buttons (Movie, Movie) , and several well-known klezmer bands perform in the program, including Kapelye, The Klezmer Conservatory Band and The Klezmatics. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Shalom Sesame: Aleph-Bet Telethon -- Discovering the Hebrew Letters is the ninth episode in the Muppets special edition series, Shalom Sesame, an educational journey through ancient and modern Israel. Kids meet old and new Muppet friends on Rechov Sumsum, the Israeli version of Sesame Street, including Grover, Cookie Monster, Moishe Oofnick the grouch, and Kippy ben Kipod, a large porcupine. In episode nine, there's a puzzle to be solved, as all the letters have disappeared from Rechov Sumsum, so Jerry Stiller and Kippy ben Kipod decide to host a telethon. In this episode, actress Bonnie Franklin joins the Muppets for a tour of authentic Kibbutz Ein Gedi on the coast of the Dead Sea. Orchards and farm animals abound, along with productive factories.
