Didi Perego Movies

Didi Perego (who was sometimes billed as Didi Sullivan through 1967) came to movies in her early twenties. A statuesque and extremely attractive ingenue, she made her debut as the wife of the hero in Mario Bava's Caltiki, the Immortal Monster (1959), and made three more movies that year, in a career that eventually encompassed 68 films. She also had some intermittent work in England (as Didi Sullivan), in episodes of such espionage series as The Avengers and Man in a Suitcase. She spent most of her career, however, in Italy (with a few appearances in American productions), where she aged into attractive matronly roles in the 1980s. Her last screen appearance was in 1992, and she died of cancer the following year. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

In the mid-'70s, Ciccio Ingrassia had a falling out with partner Franco Franchi -- with whom he co-starred in numerous popular "Franco and Ciccio" comedies before and after the quarrel -- and set out on his own, directing himself in this fairly amusing parody. Mimmo Baldi plays Luigi, the overweight son of a town mayor (Lino Banfi), who finds an amulet and takes it home. The demons inside it begin possessing the entire family. Ingrassia stars as a conman who pretends to be an exorcist, but ends up possessed as well. At one point, a Franchi impersonator is defenestrated, illustrating the depth of Ingrassia's feelings at the time. Ubaldo Lay co-stars with Tano Cimarosa and Didi Perego, and cultists will recognize Salvatore Baccaro (La Bestia in Calore, El Castello dell'Orrore) in a typically bizarre role. Well photographed by Guglielmo Mancori, although Marino Onorati's screenplay may not be very funny to those unfamiliar with the rather insular nature of many Italian comedies. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

This routine drama by François Villiers is about a father coming to grips with the fact that he has a young son. Pierre (Pierre Mondy) is an ordinary laborer but when he receives word that and former lover in Corsica is dying -- and that she bore him a son he never knew about -- Pierre quickly heads to the island. After he arrives he is in strict denial but then begins very slowly to relent. He travels around Corsica looking for someone who might adopt his nine-year-old son Pietro (Marietto) in order to train him at some job or another. Pierre's objective at the moment is to get back home as soon as he can. ~Schneewittchen und die sieben Gaukler (Hoffmann, Kurt) [109074] aka: Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge aka: Snow White and the Seven Jugglers This musical-comedy by Kurt Hoffmann is meant to be a take-off on the fairy tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but may prove the point that changing fairy tales into reality works better the other way around. Dr. Anita Rossi (Caterina Valente) travels to a dying resort hotel in the Swiss mountains with plans to resuscitate the venture. She is an engineer with expertise in heating -- ideal for the Swiss mountains -- and some business savvy. By way of personnel (the originals have quit for non-payment of salaries) she hires seven circus jugglers to act as waiters, busboys, bellhops, and other staff. Lo and behold, everything starts to work out and what is even better, Norbert (Walter Lang) the owner of the hotel, is a definite Prince Charming. Then in steps a wicked stripper to scuttle the budding romance. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Catherine Spaak was only eighteen, yet already known, when she co-starred in this comedy-drama with Nino Manfredi. She plays naive young woman Dora, who heads for the big city and a lot of growing up. Her exploits are mainly centered on the men she meets as she flits from one to the next without a great deal of worry or regret. She does have one on-again, off-again steady relationship with Nino (Manfredi) and spends some time with a middle-aged couple, Scipio and Amneris. All told, her relationships and experiences, especially her last romantic encounter which is not at all the best, contribute to her coming-of-age.

The French/Italian/Yugoslav concentration camp drama Kapo stars Susan Strasberg, who several years earlier had originated the title role in the Broadway production The Diary of Anne Frank. Here, Ms. Strasberg is once again a European Jewish teenager victimized by the Nazis. Interred in a concentration camp, Strasberg is befriended by the camp's kindly doctor, who helps her hide her true identity and work as a camp guard, or "kapo." Unfortunately, Strasberg's new found power goes to her head, and her abuse of that power is very nearly on the same level as the Nazis. Brought down to earth by the death of a close friend, Strasberg spearheads an escape attempt, sacrificing her own life in the process. Nominated for a best foreign picture Oscar in 1960, Kapo nonetheless did not find an American distributor until 1964. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An intentionally shocking drama about the down, often violent side of existence on the fringe, this story by Franco Rossi follows the same themes and attitudes found in the work of Pier Paolo Pasolini. Aldo (Gianni Garko) and Bruno (Spiros Fokas) grew up as close friends in the same neighborhood in Rome but as they got older they drifted apart. Aldo has turned to petty crime and his girlfriend, a hooker, is actually supporting him. Bruno is introduced back into the life of his friend though he himself is not a part of the shady, destructive world that surrounds Aldo. Ultimately, Bruno cannot resist the effect of Aldo and his low-life friends, leading to a few wrong decisions and eventual tragedy. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
