Per its title, the Spanish-language docudrama Tragedia en Waco Texas recounts the grisly end of the Branch Davidian compound in April, 1993, in Waco, Texas. This gripping and disturbing reenactment, helmed by Mexican director Fernando Durán, dramatizes the events preceding, during, and following the Janet Reno-ordered FBI siege on the 'Mt. Carmel Center' headquarters of the religious cult masterminded by the ill-fated David Koresh - during which a fire reduced the entire operation to a pile of ash. For anyone wondering why the Mexican government has permitted Mexico City to become the most populous city in the world when it can barely support even one half its population decently, this film and films like it provide the welcome news that the government has been doing what little it can to discourage the emigration of poor rural people to the high-altitude, swampy city that suffers from catastrophic air pollution and the ever-present possibility of even more catastrophic volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. In the story, even a respectably middle-class man and his family can only barely get by in the brutal city. Dr. Antonio Arenas, a widowed doctor, has moved with his family to the crowded city after gaining a position at a large and prestigious hospital. Once there, he discovers that he is supposed to keep his position by turning a blind eye to all sorts of illegal and unscrupulous schemes or -- worse -- becoming actively involved in them. The English-language title of this Mexican-Spanish coproduction is Blinded by Fate. At first, the film focusses on three Mexicans, whose dreams of striking it rich in America are doomed to failure. Eventually, the story narrows down to the travails of one of the three, played by Julio Aleman. Branded with a false criminal charge, Aleman knows that he will never be able to hold his head up with pride in Mexico or America if he does not clear himself. This drama revolves around a star-crossed romance between two very unlikely people. Gabriela (Maribel Guardia, a former Miss Costa Rica) is a considerably beautiful young woman from a wealthy family who was educated in the United States and therefore speaks the language of high finance and everything that has "cachet." Ulises (Valentin Trujillo), whose mother washes clothes for a living, never completed his high school education. When Gabriela and Ulises meet and fall in love, her family is understandably less than enthusiastic about Ulises, so he is determined to change their opinion of him. When he loses his job, Balbuena gathers a group of outlaws to go after the gangsters. El Loco Ordonez (Jorge Luke) is recruited to lead the vigilantes after the captain and his family are gunned down.
