Based on Paul Rudnick's hit Off-Broadway play, this romantic comedy centers on the chaotic love life of Jeffrey (Steven Weber), a gay man who swears off sex only to fall in love with his ideal man (Michael T. Weiss). Jeffrey's vow of chastity is inspired by a fear of AIDS, a prospect which has started to terrify him so much that he decides he'd be better off never making love again. He is happy and relieved for a time, until he meets Steve, a handsome, charming dreamboat who also happens to be HIV-positive. Jeffrey wants nothing more than to be with Steve, but his anxiety over the disease and fear of commitment stand in the way. Much of the humor falls to Jeffrey's friends, including the sharp-tongued Sterling (Patrick Stewart), an outwardly catty but surprisingly good-hearted interior decorator, and his young boyfriend Darius (Bryan Batt), a performer in the Broadway musical Cats. This charming comedy follows the quest of a young girl to find her unknown father through the vivid streets of New York. The film begins in Brooklyn as 17-year old Sam again asks her mother about her estranged father and again receives no answers. The determined girl then sneaks a look into her mother's 1976 datebook to look for clues. She finds two potential fathers and so writes each of them a letter of introduction. One of the men is a Latino trumpet player. He is also a womanizer. The other is Anglo, owns an art gallery, is very wealthy, and gay. Both of them are delighted at the prospect of having a daughter. Sam must now find a balance between her mom and two dads. The two disparate men teach her much about the diversity of life outside of Brooklyn. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This episode is a showcase for actress Carolyn McCormick in the recurring Law & Order role of NYPD psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Olivet. Paul Hecht is cast as prominent gynecologist Dr. Alex Merritt, whom Olivet accuses of molesting her. Further investigation reveals that the high-profile Merritt may have also been responsible for the suicide of his wife. Trainee Eddie Gordon (William O'Leary) goes a bit farther than that: he begins fantasizing that he's the Angel of Death. A welcome exception to the slasher-stalker-kidnapper films usually seen on the USA cable network, After the Shock is a tribute to the courage and heroism of Bay Area residents following the San Francisco earthquake of October 17, 1989. Director Gary A. Sherman opts for a "cinema verite" approach, utilizing a hand-held camera to recreate the style of the original on-the-spot TV reporting. The cast includes Scott Valentine, Rue McClanahan, Yaphet Kotto, Jack Scalia and Richard Anthony Crenna as various firefighters, paramedics, law officials and private citizens. One of the best performances is offered by Nick Zaninovich, a real-life quake survivor who spent seven hours trapped in his car, which was buried under a collapsed stretch of the Nimitz freeway.
