In this comedy thriller, the words of the title Bang! You're Dead! are what anyone with a computer and foolish enough to let the mad scientist in this film gain access to it is likely to see, before something ingeniously awful happens to him. The scientist met an American schoolteacher at the Frankfurt airport as she was arriving to participate in a convention for teachers of German. Almost immediately, she gets embroiled in a series of adventures, beginning with the scientist having a heart attack, being taken in hand by emergency services, and then recovering sufficiently to give them (and her) the slip. She then encounters the doctor's assistant, who knows he is up to no good, and plans to find him and thwart his plan to wreak mayhem via computer. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Daydreams woven in and out of reality soon take over this psychological drama about three middle-class couples on a vacation together at a beach, couples who used to be fired up with liberating ideas in the 1960s but who have now opted for a settled, comfortable lifestyle. One of the men is a doctor who is having an affair with the wife of another of the men, a businessman. The third man is an alcoholic, hoping to garner business favors on this shared vacation. The wife of the unfaithful doctor is a writer -- shy, withdrawn, and aware of what her husband is doing in his spare time. The wife of the alcoholic is hung up on kinky sex. The precarious veneer of normalcy starts to erode when a gorgeous blond arrives at the camp, pitches her tent, and completely unconscious of anyone else, takes off for a nude swim in the water. The next day does not bring her any increased interest in wearing adequate clothing, and soon the men are overdosing on testosterone and their wives are pretending to be too sophisticated to notice the young woman. At this point, the imaginings of the men and women take over -- scenes show them inviting the blond to a dinner that deteriorates into an orgy, or they kill her and bury her body -- is any of that true? More symbolic than it would seem at the beginning, viewers are left to draw their own conclusions as the story approaches its end. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The unfortunate Traugot (Lou Castel) suddenly finds himself sandwiched between his former lover Freya (director Helke Sander) and his new love Irmtraut (Rebecca Pauly), both women are good friends -- or were. Traugot waffles between the two women and ultimately, seems to want both, why not. Freya vacillates between exasperation, a still-burning love for the waffler, anger against him, and the desire just to leave it all behind. As the story unfolds, she takes action while under the influence of her runaway emotions, and perhaps that is the catalyst that finally shakes up Traugot and forces him to make up his mind about his potentially monogamous future. As in previous films by director Helke Sander, women's issues are subtly raised and handled appropriately, in an engaging and relevant story told with wit and a visually sensitive camera. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Wim Wenders' The State of Things (Der Stand der Dinge) was financed by one of the director's chief mentors, Francis Ford Coppola. This highly autobiographical work concerns a shoestring movie producer and his ragtag crew. Stranded in the outer reaches of Portugal, the director doesn't even have any film in his camera. There's nothing left to do but scare up a potential backer--preferably one of those rich, movie-mad Americans. In illustrating the plight of the fictional filmmakers, Wenders strikes a blow on behalf of the homeless and disenfranchised everywhere; it is also an a clef recreation of the difficulties faced by the director during production of his first American film Hammett (also made under the auspices of Coppola). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Director and writer (James Benning) has put a couple from the Midwestern U.S. into New York City, and then used the cityscapes to stand in for any time or place that is relevant to the moment, as the couple reminisce about their past. Still shots, several enigmatic, are interspersed with repeated compositions, or a camera panning across a scene, to subvert the notion of action as a basis for story-telling. Instead, the story -- as such -- is related through voiceovers and telephone conversations worked into a scene. As visual details, narration, and a final phone conversation come to an end, the viewers may at last understand what all those still shots and panning meant. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A young woman trained as an historian is intrigued by the diary of Flora Tristan, active in feminist causes in 19th century France. The quest to find more information about Tristan takes the historian on a trip to Lyons, where she begins to discover more about herself in the process of research. She accomplishes these discoveries somewhat enigmatically, however, through recording sounds like her own footsteps, for example. For feminists and other viewers, Flora Tristan seems to have been short-circuited by this latter-day admirer. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
