Tom Patricola Movies
There's slightly more fancy than fact in this lavish film biography of legendary American composer George Gershwin, but oh! That music! Director Irving Rapper had wanted Tyrone Power to play Gershwin, but Power was still serving in the Marines, so Rapper had to settle for Robert Alda--who isn't bad at all, just a trifle over-enthusiastic. The film traces Gershwin's rise from a "song plugger" for a Manhattan music publishing company to the heights of international fame and fortune. Gershwin's first big hit is "Swanee," introduced on Broadway by Al Jolson (who plays himself, making his first film appearance in six years). In collaboration with his lyricist brother Ira (well played by Herbert Rudley), George pens hit after hit in show after show. Impresario Charles Coburn is happy with this, but George's kindly old music teacher Albert Basserman wants his prize pupil to aspire to something more artistic. Gershwin responds with "Rhapsody in Blue", which debuts at Aeolian Hall in 1924 under the baton of bandleader Paul Whiteman (also playing himself). As his fame and workload grows, George finds he has no time at all for romance; the two (fictional) ladies in his life, both of whom eventually realize that they'll always have to play second fiddle to Gershwin's muse, are musical comedy star Joan Leslie and socialite Alexis Smith. Gershwin continues to compose such masterpieces as "An American in Paris", "Cuban Overture", "Concerto in F" and the 1935 folk opera Porgy and Bess. He will not allow himself to rest on his laurels, ruthlessly pushing himself to top all his previous accomplishments. Finally, the strain proves too great: George Gershwin dies of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1937, at the age of 39. Featured in the cast as themselves (in addition to those already mentioned) are Gershwin's lifelong friend Oscar Levant, producer George White, and Broadway performers Tom Patricola and Hazel Scott. Morris Carnovsky and Rosemary DeCamp play George's parents, while Julie Bishop is cast as Ira's wife Lee, who is saddled with the film's silliest line: "Ira, promise me that you'll never become a genius." Alternately hokey and inspired, Rhapsody in Blue has weathered the years as one of Hollywood's most solid biopics. The Irving Berlin-Morrie Ryskind Broadway musical hit Louisiana Purchase came to the screen with surprisingly few emendations in 1941. Bob Hope replaces Broadway's William Gaxton in the role of innocent political flunkey Jim Taylor, set up to take the fall for wholesale graft by a group of corrupt Louisiana politicians. Taylor's friendly adversary is bumptuous U.S. senator Loganberry (Victor Moore, repeating his stage role), whose efforts at reform only end up getting him in hot water as well. Loganberry solves his own problems by marrying Mme. Bordelaise (Irene Bordoni), the temptress who'd been sent out to place him in a compromising position, forcing Taylor to straighten out the mess himself in a hilarious climactic courtroom filibuster. ("If it's good enough for James Stewart, it's good enough for me.") Some of the satirical bite of the Broadway version had to be blunted for movie-audience consumption, though Paramount managed to avoid potential lawsuits by using a device which originated in the play: an amusing opening "opera bouffe" wherein it was established beyond all doubt that Louisiana was a totally mythical state! (At one point, a bevy of chorus girls sing the "any resemblance to actual persons living or dead" disclaimer.) Advertised variously as a "musical romance" and an "operetta style drama", Children of Dreams was the last of three Warner Bros. musicals written directly for the screen by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II. The story revolves around a group of singing migrant workers, laboring away in a Western apple orchard. One of the more talented of the workers, pretty Molly Standing (Margaret Schilling), manages to achieve fame and fortune as an opera star. This turn of events was reportedly inspired by the career of real-life diva Anna Case, who is about the only New York stage personality not seen in this picture. Children of Dreams offers a few amusing turns by vaudevillian Tom Patricola and by Show Boat's original "Captain Andy," Charles Winnigner. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this sassy romantic comedy, Clive Brook plays Neil Dunlap, a lawyer who is heartbroken when his wife leaves him. Neil is out drowning his sorrows when he meets Pansy Gray (Ruth Chatterton), a high-spirited chorus girl. Neil and Pansy hit the town, and a brutally hung-over Neil wakes up the next day to discover that he and Patsy are now man and wife. Neil's immediate reaction is that he's made a horrible mistake, but he finds Pansy so sweet, and she seems to taken with him, that he doesn't have the heart to tell her he wants a divorce. Against the advice of family and friends, Neil tries to make the marriage work, and he struggles to remodel Pansy into a respectable lady. Anybody's Woman was directed by Dorothy Arzner, one of Hollywood's first (and only) successful female directors. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Filmed in "Fox Grandeur," an early widescreen process, Happy Days was the immediate follow-up to Fox Studios' Movietone Follies of 1929. Most of the film takes place on the showboat of Mississippi entrepreneur Colonel Billy Batcher (Charles E. Evans). When the Colonel faces foreclosure after several failing seasons, soubrette Margie (Marjorie White) stages a fund-raising revue on the boat, enlisting the aid of all the big stars who got their start with Batcher. By an amazing coincidence, virtually all of the showboat alumni are under contract to Fox Studios! Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell perform "We'll Build a Little World of Our Own," Victor McLaglen and Edmund Lowe kid their roughneck screen images in the novelty number "Vic and Eddie," Sharon Lynn and Ann Pennington offer the "hot" dance routine "Snake Hips," and "Whispering" Jack Smith offers a rendition of the title tune. Also on hand are Will Rogers, El Brendel, Walter Catlett (who also staged the musical numbers), Lew Brice (Fanny's brother), Dixie Lee (Mrs. Bing Crosby) and Georgie Jessel -- not to mention an uncredited 14-year-old chorus girl named Betty Grable. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
One Mad Kiss was designed to showcase the Latin-American performers in the employ of Fox Studios. Tenor Don José Mojica heads the cast as a dashing Spanish outlaw who fights the corrupt provisional government. Heroine Mona Maris despises the hero at first but learns to love both him and his cause. The evil governor hopes to capture the bandit by using an intercepted love letter as bait. Little does "the guv" know that Mojica is already one step ahead of him -- maybe even two. This melodrama follows the lives of three sisters. One dies while giving birth, another gets married and goes to the US, and the last one gets involved with a Viennese musician. The two survivors become wealthy, and seem to forget about their impoverished mother back in Italy. Unbeknownst to any of the parties, the money the good daughters send home is being taken by a third party. That person's identity is discovered when the women and their spouses come to Italy to visit. They later leave the poor woman with a nice retirement fund. Songs include: "Italian Kisses" (L. In this college campus musical comedy from director James Tinling, the first film in which John Wayne received billing (though it's as Duke Morrison), Lois Moran stars as Mary, a pretty young singer who is sought after by two competing composers. Wayne plays Phil, one of the two rival songwriters who are vying not only for the girl, but for a 1,500-dollar prize for writing the best show tune. Mary agrees to sing each of their entries in the contest, but in the end she can only choose one of the young men. Adapted from Richard Connell's short story A Friend of Napoleon, Seven Faces was a tour de force for the multitalented Paul Muni (in his second screen appearance). Although only 33 at the time, Muni is most convincing as elderly Papa Chibuou, caretaker of a Parisian wax museum. When the museum goes bust, its most popular wax effigies go on the auction block. Unable to meet the price demanded for his favorite statue, that of Napoleon Bonaparte, Chibou steals the statue and is convicted of theft. Defense attorney Georges Dufeyl (Russell Gleason), who happens to be in love with Helene (Marguerite Churchill), the daughter of the trial judge (Lester Lonergan, who also co-directed the film), sympathetically takes Chibou's case on a pro bono basis. The film's best scene finds Chibou dreaming that he is offering Dufeyl and Helene romantic advice in the guises of six of the museum's wax figures, including Napoleon, Don Juan, Svengali and Franz Schubert. Although shown to excellent advantage, Paul Muni wasn't happy with the film medium and stayed off screen for over a year after the completion of Seven Faces. If Muni was unhappy, imagine the discomfort of Broadway headliner Tom Patricola, whose supporting role in the film went completely uncredited. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this musical romance, a showgirl tours Europe in a troupe. There she falls in love with a Balkan prince. Naturally, his parents are appalled and try to stop the romance, but a revolution occurs and their son flees to Hollywood to marry his leggy lover. In this comedy drama, a very early talkie, set in the splendiferous South Seas, a French lassie charms a sea captain who takes her for his wife and sets sail for his conservative New England home. There the staid locals are shocked by the captain's free-spirited bride. More trouble ensues when the bride becomes disenchanted with her new husband because she believes that he loves his ship more than he does her. In the end the sea captain sails to France. There he discovers that his bride has inherited a fortune. In this melodrama, set in the Far North, a half-Eskimo woman leaves her tribe and her husband to find adventure with a visiting sea captain. Unfortunately, she finds that the big world isn't what she expected. She ends up having to support the lazy sea-captain by singing.
