Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic tale of interplanetary adventure arrives on the big screen in this sweeping sci-fi spectacle marking the live-action debut of Oscar-winning director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALL-E). Civil War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) was still haunted by the violence he witnessed on the battlefield when he inexplicably awoke on the distant planet of Barsoom (Mars). Upon learning that the inhabitants of Barsoom are bracing for a major conflict and that war appears inevitable, John finds out that love is a rare commodity on the Red Planet, and summons the courage to be the hero the Martians have been hoping for. Meanwhile, John falls under the spell of the enchanting Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), who struggles to suppress her compassion in a society known for its warlike ways. Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, and Mark Strong co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Sam Rockwell and Vera Farmiga star in director George Ratliff's uncomfortable psychological thriller Joshua, as Brad and Abby Cairn, an affluent young stockbroker and his wife, raising children in New York City. Their firstborn, the nine-year-old Joshua (Jacob Kogan), is a frighteningly intelligent child -- to such a degree that he thinks and acts decades ahead of his age. Nearly always clad in formal wear and demonstrating limitless brilliance as a pianist -- with a marked predilection for "dissonant" classical pieces -- Joshua gravitates toward his gay aesthete uncle (Dallas Roberts) as a close friend, but distances himself from his immediate kin -- particularly when Abby brings a newborn baby sister home from the hospital and unwisely alienates the young tyke. As the days pass, one at a time, the mood at the house regresses from healthy and happy to strange, unsettled, and disorienting; meanwhile, bizarre events transpire. As the baby's whines drive an already strained Abby to the point of a nervous breakdown, Joshua devolves from eccentric to downright sociopathic behavior, discarding all of his toys, disemboweling a stuffed animal, and killing off pets. One at a time, family members also begin to suffer tragic fates -- but are they Joshua's fevered and psychotic doings or merely the result of happenstance? ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

In the stomach-turning tradition of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hostel, and Jeepers Creepers comes the direct-to-video slasherfest Blood Ranch, starring James Fitzpatrick, Madeleine Lindley, Dayton Knoll, and Daniel O'Meara. A group of co-eds on a cross-country desert journey save a young woman from an imposing black van. Shortly afterward, their car mysteriously breaks down and they are forced to seek asylum at a nearby ranch. Little do they realize that it houses denizens of "The Web" -- a twisted allegiance of psychopaths, sexual predators, and mentally impaired subhuman maniacs who devote their lives to finding unsuspecting young men and women to systematically imprison, torture, and dismember. Their latest captors will be forced to claw their way out in a bloody battle to the death -- if they hope to ever see the outside world again. Corbin Timbrook directs, from a script by Antonio Hernandez. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A group of small-time criminals decides that with the recent popularity of British gangster movies, they could make a lot more money by filming their exploits and making a movie than from the actual heists. They enlist the help of a beautiful woman named Crystal to play the damsel in distress but things go awry when they ask local mob boss Eddie to play the leader of the operation. While they're in the middle of shooting the scene, Eddie insists that they go through with the actual robbery-complicating matters for everyone involved. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

Samantha Morton, who soon after this film gained attention for her role in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown, makes an impressive feature debut in first time writer-director Carine Adler's bittersweet saga about a troubled woman's uneven progress toward self-realization. Morton plays Iris, a woman who feels ignored by her boyfriend Gary (Matthew Delamere), her self-possessed pregnant sister Rose (Claire Rushbrook), and even her beloved mother (Rita Tushingham). After their mother dies suddenly of a brain tumor, Iris falls apart. Tired of a supervisor's hostility, she suddenly quits her job as a clothing saleswoman and has a sexual encounter with Tom (Stuart Townsend), a man she meets in a movie theater. Iris leaves Gary, starts wearing her mother's wig, and dresses like a slut. She gets drunk and desperately picks up men in bars, and she ends up being abused by Max (Daniel O'Meara). Iris mooches money from her sister and they fight over a ring that Rose claims their mother gave her. She finds out that her best friend Vron (Christine Tremarco) has taken up with Gary and tries to seduce Rose's husband Frank (Mark Womack). ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi
