A household name and a cover girl in her native Poland, the dazzlingly talented and uniquely beautiful chanteuse-cum-actress Alicja Bachleda-Curus sported an arresting sun-drenched European look, a winning voice, and the dramatic chops to carry her as far as she wanted to go. She debuted as a singer before the age of seven and netted a host of music awards at Polish youth festivals through her 15th year. In the mean time, Bachleda-Curus took her cinematic bow as an ingenue, with a lead role at age 12 in Mikolaj Grabowski's feature The Phantom-Man-Animal. Within a half-decade of that premiere, she landed a role for the legendary Andrzej Wajda, in his 1999 Pan Tadeusz. Bachleda-Curus signed for her first major crossover part under the aegis of director Marco Kreuzpaintner, as one of the leads in the finely felt, gender-bending teen drama Summer Storm (2004), and landed another lead in the coming-of-age saga Stealth (2007), another international crossover success that told of two siblings who investigate their Polish ancestry. A man named August (Colombus Short) finds his life in danger after discovering evidence of murder during a one night stand, and realizing that the victim is a notorious drug dealer and brother to one of the city's biggest drug enforcers. Lured into the bedroom by the gorgeous Signe, August is terrified when he picks up her phone and stumbles across footage of dealer Jesus Guzman being brutally murdered. To make matters worse, the killer is none other than the son of an influential New York investment banker. Just then, Jesus' brother Angel shows up. He's looking for his brother, and he'll kill anyone who gets in his way, or tries prevent him from uncovering the truth. A man makes a startling discovery that may or may not be magical in this drama from writer and director Neil Jordan. Syracuse (Colin Farrell) is a fisherman who lives in a small town on the Southern coast of Ireland. Syracuse is an alcoholic, and though he's been sober for two years, most of his neighbors still remember him as a embarrassing drunk, while his ex-wife now lives with another man. Syracuse tries to scratch out a living from the ocean and help support his young daughter, Annie (Alison Barry), who suffers from a serious kidney ailment, but good luck is rarely with him until one day, when he pulls up his nets and finds what appears to be a woman caught in them. To Syracuse's surprise, the woman is alive, and he brings her to shore. The woman is a mysterious and secretive type who doesn't want to tell Syracuse anything about herself or be seen by anyone; Annie proposes that she's a selkie, a mythic creature of the sea that can take human form when it falls in love with the right person. Syracuse almost believes that Annie is right, especially after good luck and good fishing begins coming his way after discovering her, but unfortunately the woman Syracuse has named Ondine (Alicja Bachleda) has certain concerns more pressing than the good fortune of her benefactor. After his 13-year-old sister is abducted by sex traffickers, a determined Mexican teen travels from the barrios of Mexico City to a run-down stash house in New Jersey in a desperate attempt to rescue the frightened girl before she is swallowed whole by one of the criminal underworld's darkest secrets. Jorge's (Cesar Ramos) adolescent sister, Adriana (Paulina Gaitan), has been kidnapped and thrust into a lucrative underground trade in which young girls are bought and sold to the highest bidder. Now, as the terrified youngster is herded through a complex network of underground tunnels leading into the United States, her only ally is a Polish woman named Veronica (Alicja Bachleda), who has been tricked into the trade by the same nefarious gang. After circumventing immigration officers and eventually working his way across the border, the desperate Jorge comes into contact with a Texas lawman named Ray (Kevin Kline), whose own devastating personal loss to sex traffickers causes him to join the search for Adriana. In the dark days that follow, Jorge and Ray form a close bond as they witness the horrors of a secret Internet sex slave auction and discover just how far the depths of human depravity can plunge while attempting to maintain hope that brother and sister will one day be reunited.
