This plodding drama finds Sandra (Libertad Leblanc) as a prostitute with a drunken father and mentally challenged mother. Her naive boyfriend joins in a triumvirate who ignore her profession and pretend that everything is just fine. Two different edits were made of this feature, one which exploits the nudity of the principle character. The film failed at the box office in it's native Argentina and continued to disappoint at the box office elsewhere except for the occasional porno-theater showing. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Laura (Isabel Sarli) is a bisexual nymphomaniac who often carries on with her housekeeper Andrea (Alba Mujica). When Carlos (Armando Bo) sees her bathing nude one day, he falls in love with the vivacious vixen. She willingly gives in to his amorous advances, warning him she may never be able to be faithful to just one person. The two are married, but Laura continues to select a series of lovers to cure her insatiable desire for sex. The repair man is her first conquest, then she takes to the street for more willing lovers. Laura and Carlos fly to see a New York psychiatrist to cure her affliction, but only advancing age may finally cure her need for physical love. She picks up more lovers on Broadway and considers suicide as the only way out in this exploitation feature punctuated by graphic nudity. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Filmed in Argentina, Republic's The Avengers stars John Carroll as a handsome adventurer known as Don Careless. Our Hero hopes to save heroine Maria Moreno (Adele Mara) from a forced marriage to a ruthless revolutionary (Roberto Airaldi). Both Carroll and supporting actor Vincente Padula play dual roles, for reasons that the film makes clear (even though the official studio resumé does not). Billed tenth, Fernando Lamas is given "and introducing" billing in the credits, and never mind that he'd been in films since 1942. The Avengers is based on a novel by Rex Beach. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The title of this Argentine drama translates as The Mirror. Indeed, that mirror is virtually a character in itself, offering memories of the past to aging heroine Mirtha Legrand. As she gazes into the looking glass, Legrand relives all her past loves, heartbreaks, triumphs and tribulations. In so doing, she gains a new perspective on her present life. Though generally sentimental and heavily dramatic, El Espejo is leavened by moments of uproarious comedy supplied by supporting player Tito Gomez. The film was written by Carlos Olivari and Sixton Pondal Rios, who'd previous struck box-office gold with Los Martes Orquideas. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

La Novia de Primavera (Spring Bride) was based on the popular Argentine radio serial of the same name. Maria Duval stars as the title character -- or at least she poses as that character. To impress friends and family, Duval pretends to be the fiancee of best-selling author Roberto Airaldi. When Airaldi shows up in town, he good-naturedly agrees to keep up the pretense, with amusing if predictable results. La Novia de Primavera appealed most to fans of the original radio show, of which there were precious few outside of Argentina. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This odd little Argentine drama gets under way when a pair of wealthy spinsters adopt the son of a washerwoman. This they do to provide a companion for their spoiled-brat nephew. Growing into maturity, the lads remain polar opposites: the adopted boy is strong and resourceful, the nephew weak and wishy-washy. When both boys fall in love with the same girl, the nephew resorts to drastic -- and unfair -- measures to win her hand. Incredibly, the adopted suitor, out of gratitude to the old ladies, nobly steps aside, allowing the girl to choose the "wrong man." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

El Camino de las Llamas is based on a novel by best-selling South American author Hugo Wast. The heroine is Argentine mountain girl Pepita Serrador, raised by her father to behave like a man in order to defend herself. Upon attaining adulthood, Serrador assumes command of a band of gauchos, all of them dedicated to guarding a long and winding road against invasion from Chile. In an attempt to gain control of the road, Chilean officer Jose Olarra romances Serrador, even though his heart belongs to Indian maiden Elisa Galve. This romantic triangle results in tragedy for the principals, but the long-range result is the end of hostilities between Chile and Argentina. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The English-language title of this Argentine rags-to-riches yarn is The Novel of a Poor Young Man. The protagonist is played by singing sensation (and future director of note) Hugo Del Carril, cast as an orphaned lad who falls in love with the daughter (Amanda Ledesma) of his boss. Through a combination of pluck, luck and Herculean heroics, Del Carril wins not only the girl but a lifetime of wealth and luxury. So corny is the plotline and the directorial approach of Luis Bayon Herrera that the film can be enjoyed as "high camp" instead of the inspirational drama it was evidently intended to be. Production values are far better than the film deserves. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The characteristically expert direction of Luis Amadori helps lift Sonar, No Cuesta Nada out of the ordinary. The title translates literally as Dream, It Costs Nothing, a philosophy adhered to religiously by idealistic attorney Francisco Alvarez. When his two best friends come to him seeking a divorce, Alvarez manages to delay the proceedings for several years, hoping against hoping that the couple will reconcile. When this finally happens, our hero must contend with the comic complications arising from the reconciliation. The film is stolen by the Legrand Twins, a pair of 15-year-old singers who'd risen to fame on South American radio. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
