South African-born actor Adhir Kalyan first caught the eye of stateside television viewers when cast in the as a Pakistani Muslim exchange student who came to live with a typical suburban American family in the CW sitcom Aliens in America. Though he had previously appeared in episodes of such U.K. television dramas as Spooks and Holby City, Kaylan's part on Aliens in America was his first regular small-screen role on either side of the pond. In 2009 Kalyan joined the cast of the David Spade sitcom Rules of Engagement, but continued to juggle a feature career with bit roles in such films as Up in the Air, High School and No Strings Attached. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Lifelong friends Adam (Ashton Kutcher) and Emma (Natalie Portman) attempt to avoid falling in love after falling into each other's beds in this comedy exploring the complexities and quirks of having friends with benefits. Adam was a typical, hormonal 14-year-old when he first came on to Emma at summer camp -- and got shot down in flames. In the years that followed, however, Adam and Emma continued to cross paths until, eventually, they both caved to their animal instincts. Despite an intense session of earth-shaking sex, however, Emma makes it clear to Adam that the last thing she wants is a committed relationship. And thanks to the fact that Adam's father (Kevin Kline), a fallen television star, has just begun dating his son's ex-girlfriend, the horrified bachelor has developed an aversion to monogamy as well. At first their casual stance on sex works great for both; Emma can focus on her career instead of allowing her emotions to dictate her decisions, and Adam can play the field without fear of hurting her feelings. Over time, though, a funny thing happens -- Adam begins to develop feelings for Emma that he never had for any of his countless conquests. Before they both know it, love has reared its ugly head and they've gotten too emotionally involved to cut the relationship off cold. But is commitment in the cards for the couple that always swore it would never get serious, or has the time come for them to finally part ways once and for all? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This CW sitcom was set in Medora, Wisconsin, where dwelled the Tolchuck family: Father Gary (Scott Patterson), mother Franny (Amy Pietz), son Justin (Dan Byrd) and daughter Claire (Lindsay Shaw). Desperate to fit in with the cool kids at school, the nerdish Justin (who narrated the series, Malcolm in the Middle style) decided if he couldn't make friends, he'd "import" one. Thus, he talked his parents into being the sponsors for an exchange student from Pakistan, an amiable Muslin teenager named Raja (Adhir Kalyan). Though Justin and Raja formed an immediate bond, mom Claire was a bit frightened by her guest, her head filled with news reports of middle-east terrorism and such. Conversely, dad Gary was quite impressed by Raja's courtesy, loyalty, and strong work ethic--and besides, he was getting $500 a month for sponsoring the kid. As for Claire, she was too preoccupied with being the "dream girl" of every jock in school, and the actual girlfriend of classmate Jeffrey (Harlan Jackson), to concern herself with Raja. In case the reader hasn't caught on by now, the purpose of this series was to dispel viewers in the post-9/11 era of the idotic assumption that every Muslim posed an eminent threat to the American way of life: Indeed, Raja may have been the most lovable and nonthreatening TV alien since Robin Williams' Mork From Ork. Aliens in America debuted October 1, 2007. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The CBS sitcom Rules of Engagement chronicled the rituals of dating, marriage and commitment, as seen through the eyes of two couples and their single friend. Former Dawson's Creek costars Adam Hudson and Biance Kajlich were respectively cast as Adam and Jennifer, who became engaged in the very first episode, much to the dismay of Adam's acerbic bachelor pal Russell, played in typical David Spade fashion by David Spade. Adam and Jennifer were subsequently befriended by Jeff (Patrick Warburton) and Audrey (Megyn Price), who after 12 years of marriage regarded themselves as experts on the subject of matrimonial harmony (though they seldom practiced what they preached!) Coproduced by comic actor Adam Sandler, Rules of Engagement premiered February 5, 2007, but despite its strong opening (its lead-in was the popular Two and a Half Men, the series was placed on hiatus as of March 19. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
