Xavier Samuel Movies

Australian-born actor Xavier Samuel studied his craft at Flinders University before taking on a professional career both on-stage and onscreen. He made waves with a role on the Australian TV series McLeod's Daughters in 2003, and later transitioned to the big screen with roles in 2007's September and the 2008 film Newcastle. Two years later, Samuel became a familiar face to American moviegoers thanks to his role as Riley in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, with a subsequent role on Roland Emmerich's Anonymous (2011) revealing that the emerging actor had a flair for Shakespearean dislogue as well. Meanwhile, following a bloody struggle with an obsessed classmate in The Loved Ones, Samuel found himself pitted against nature's fiercest predator in Bait -- an Australian thriller about a group of grocery store shoppers who are pitted against man-eating sharks after a freak tsunami plunges the market underwater. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

Director Roland Emmerich takes a break from his long string of big-budget disaster films with Anonymous, a historical drama that suggests Shakespeare was a fraud. Edward de Vere (Rhys Ifans) is an aristocrat who yearns to write poetry and plays, but due to social and political constraints, he is forced to use a front for his political-minded works because they subtly encourage Queen Elizabeth to alter her plan for succession in a way that is in direct opposition to her most-trusted political advisers. When drunken, illiterate, fame-hungry actor William Shakespeare (Rafe Spall) passes off the plays as his own, de Vere finds his man, but eventually he is blackmailed when the morally dubious thespian wants more and more. Anonymous screened at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Loyal Brent turns Lola down, but he learns the hard way she doesn't handle disappointment well. Sibling rivalry stands in the way of a young man's dreams in this coming of age drama from Australia. Jesse (Lachlan Buchanan) is seventeen years old and he's not interested in much besides surfing. Jesse's constant desire to hit the beach is fueled in part by an unhappy home life; his older half-brother Victor (Reshad Strik) used to be a local surfing champ until an injury forced him to put away his board, and now he's spends his days wallowing in cynicism and alcohol, while Jesse's younger brother Fergus (Xavier Samuel) is a punk rocker who has recently embraced his homosexuality, something Jesse hasn't become comfortable with. Jesse dreams of joining the local surfing team, and when a group of his friends and fellow surfers make plans for an all-night party on the beach, Jesse is determined to attend, even if it means lying to his parents. After a day on the surf, Jesse and his pals kick back with plenty of booze and marijuana while urging some local beach bunnies to join them for the evening, but things take an uncomfortable turn when Victor shows up and senses that his younger brother is poised to take his place as one of the stars of the local surfing scene. Newcastle was the first feature film from writer and director Dan Castle. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
