Warren Beatty directed and starred in this big-budget action comedy featuring Chester Gould's square-jawed, two-dimensional comic strip detective. Ruthless gangster Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) touches off a gang war against underworld boss Lips Manlis (Paul Sorvino), with Big Boy and his minions rubbing out enough of Manlis's goons (along with Manlis himself) to take over his nightclub, and a healthy percentage of the city's criminal activities in the process. Caprice also gains proprietary rights to Manlis's girlfriend, nightclub chanteuse Breathless Mahoney (Madonna). Big Boy's next move to is unite the rest of the city's crooks under his command; this wave of corruption attracts the attention of lawman Dick Tracy, who is determined to smash Caprice's criminal network once and for all. As Tracy plots to put Big Boy behind bars where he belongs, Breathless uses her considerable charms in an attempt to sway Tracy from the path of righteousness; this causes no small amount of anxiety for Tracy's long-suffering female companion, Tess Trueheart (Glenne Headly), and the street-smart kid (Charlie Korsmo) they've been keeping an eye on. The various bad guys, heavily made up to resemble Gould's cartoon characters (though Beatty is not made up to resemble Tracy), include Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, R.G. Armstrong, and William Forsythe. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The cheerleaders of Benedict High are a rowdy, randy bunch with little regard for rules, decorum, or anything that gets in the way of a good time with the stud football players they date. The big game against Baker High is coming up, and the intense rivalry between the schools leads to spirited chicken fights on the beach and extensive T.P. sessions. The cheerleaders' chaperone, Ms. Johnson (Jacqueline Cole), tries hard to rally her charges and keep their restless libidos from distracting the star players, but they continually take advantage of her sweet nature and naïveté, leading to high jinks which get some of their boyfriends suspended from the team. However, high school politics will soon be the least of their troubles. Benedict High's creepy janitor, Billy (Jack Kruschen), is a member of a local Satanic group, and he wants revenge against all the kids who ridicule him on campus. He kidnaps the four cheerleaders and Ms. Johnson, then drives them to a remote location to sacrifice and ravage his victims on a Satanic altar. Suddenly overcome by the dark forces of the underworld, Patti (Kerry Sherman) strips naked of her own volition and climbs upon the altar, where she is imbued with a strange power that knocks Billy cold. The girls seek out the nearest law, which turns out to be Sherriff Bubb (John Ireland); he also doubles as the Satanic High Priest of the area. When his wife, Emma (Yvonne DeCarlo), senses the dark power that has invaded Patti, they decide that they have been delivered the perfect virgin sacrifice to their evil Lord. The girls make a hasty escape, but discover that the tiny town they've landed in is a hotbed of Satanism, so they are recaptured and brought once again before the devil's altar for a Black Mass. But which of these sassy, over-sexed girls is the virgin meant for sacrifice? The shocking answer leads to death, destruction, and a whole new way of life for the cheerleaders of Benedict High. ~ Fred Beldin, Rovi

Michael Conrad, some ten years' removed from Hill Street Blues, co-stars in the excessively violent Head On. Conrad and Michael Witney play a couple of emotionally disturbed ex-soldiers who wander from town to town, wreaking havoc wherever they go. At one point, they rape Lori Saunders, who in less troublesome times was one of the Petticoat Junction girls. Finally, Conrad receives his comeuppance at the hands of a vengeful lumberjack. There may be a redeeming social value to Head On, but you might have to sandblast for it. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

At least Angels Die Hard strives to be something different. The usual motorcyle bums are in attendance, but this time they're the heroes rather than the antagonists. The storyline, concerning a mine cave-in in a small community, bears traces of the 1931 German film Kammeradschaft. Though on the outs with the community, the bikers prove to be heroes as they aid in the rescue of the trapped miners. But don't be lulled into thinking that Angels Die Hard is family fare: it still carries an R rating. The familiar faces dotting the film's cast include R. G. Armstrong, William Smith (what would a biker flick be without William Smith?) and Dan "Grizzly Adams" Haggerty. Filmed in 1970, Angels Die Hard was not given a general release until 1984. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Tom Palmer (Garth Pillsbury) is a good natured "bush jockey," flying chartered tours in and out of scenic British Columbia and entertaining visitors at his remote mountain cabin. He shares his secluded home with his wife, Vixen (Erica Gavin), a hot-blooded wildcat of a woman who is irresistibly drawn to illicit physical affairs despite truly loving her husband. Her pants are even hot enough to flirt shamelessly with her own brother, a motorcycle riding hooligan named Jud (Jon Evans), though his African-American friend, Niles (Harrison Page), earns nothing but Vixen's racist contempt. When Tom brings a wealthy young couple to the lodge for a few days of fishing, Vixen goes on the offensive and soon has her way with both visitors, helping to patch up their marriage in the process. Next she decides to ease the sizzling sexual tension with her brother by joining him in the shower, and their incestuous coupling is witnessed by Niles. Again, Vixen cruelly insults his race and taunts him for dodging the American draft by heading for Canada. Frustrated and angry, Niles starts talking with Tom's new charter flight customer, an Irishman named Mr. O'Bannion (Michael Donovan O'Donnell), who is secretly planning to hijack Tom's plane to reach Cuba. He's a Communist, and after a political debate, Niles decides to join his cause and help O'Bannion carry out his terrorism. Once the felonious duo are up in the air with Tom and Vixen, though, she refuses to keep her volatile tongue still, and nothing goes as planned. ~ Fred Beldin, Rovi
