The directorial debut from filmmaker Ilko Davidov, this documentary examines the life and death of Todd Loren, who gained both acclaim and ridicule for publishing his controversial Rock 'N' Roll Comics before being murdered in 1992. Using interviews with the likes of Alice Cooper and Mojo Nixon as well as home-movie footage of Loren, Davidov attempts to shed some light on Loren's mystery-shrouded slaying. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

A quartet of short tales of cannibalistic terror are collected in this horror anthology. A group of scientists are trapped inside a secure laboratory where a profoundly dangerous contagion has been formulated. Leaving the lab would mean releasing the deadly cargo to the world, but when the researchers run out of food, their sense of self-preservation comes up against their desire to protect others. Elsewhere, an affirmative action lawsuit results in a legal decree that states employers cannot discriminate against zombies in their hiring practices, giving brain-eating ghouls a whole new level of visibility. Later, three strange women with magical powers are determined to capture a young orphaned child, but a hulking giant is determined to protect the youngster's safety. And finally, a demonic creature that feeds on human flesh has made its way into a maximum security prison, where it begins preying on the prisoners on death row. However, one of the condemned men is not about to give up his life without a fight. Featuring songs and a cameo appearance from Mojo Nixon, A Four Course Meal was the first feature film for director Clay Liford. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The huge success of the video games featuring animated Italian plumbers the Mario Brothers led to this $42 million live action movie. The two brothers (Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo) live in Manhattan and are chasing Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis), who wears a necklace made from a meteor fragment. Its powers can free a race of reptilian creatures from the city's sewers. The villainous ruler of the creatures, who are descendants of dinosaurs, is King Koopa (Dennis Hopper). Koopa has kidnapped Daisy and taken her to the underworld of Dinohattan, which is rat-infested and strewn with garbage. The Mario Brothers must overcome many obstacles, just as they do in video games, to free the princess. The film spares no expense with its use of animatronic monsters and high-tech special effects. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide

Until its last 10 minutes or so, this filmed biography of controversial recording star Jerry Lee Lewis plays like a live-action cartoon. As played by Dennis Quaid, "the killer" is a very mixed-up individual: a saintly sinner, a world-wise naif, a skilled performer with zero sense of discipline, a loving husband who uses his wife for a punching bag. The story takes place during the years 1956 through 1958, as Lewis rises to the top of the charts with such hits as "Crazy Arms," "A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," and the title tune. Along the way, he falls in love with his second cousin Myra (Winona Ryder), eventually marrying the girl. When it is revealed that Myra is only 13 years old, Lewis is condemned as a molester and pervert by the public (his disastrous tour of England during this crisis is depicted in hilarious Tex Avery fashion). After establishing a brisk, satirical tone through most of the proceedings, the film plummets into heavy dramatics in its final portions, jarring disastrously with all that has gone before. Otherwise, Quaid is terrific as Lewis (expertly lip-synching to the original records,) and Ryder is equally good as the long-suffering Myra. Featured in the cast are Alec Baldwin as Jerry's cousin Jimmy Swaggart (the same!), Michael St. Gerard as Lewis' great rival Elvis, and Steve Allen as himself. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
