The fine line between drama and real life is crossed with tragic results in this German horror mystery film that is set in modern London and centers on a stage production of Jack the Ripper's life. During the run of the play, a series of murders, eerily similar to Jack's, occur. This doesn't bother the lead actor too much until he discovers that his fake knife has been replaced by a real one during a performance. Horrified, he flees the theater. Pursued by Scotland Yard, he must somehow prove his innocence lest he be sent to the gallows. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Fritz Lang had washed his hands of the Dr. Mabuse series with 1960's 1000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse. Thus, the directorial reins of Dr. Mabuse vs. Scotland Yard (Scotland Yard jagt Dr. Mabuse) were in the capable, if not inspired, hands of Paul May. Declared legally dead, the evil, megalomaniac Mabuse continues to exercise his influence from beyond the grave. The Doc's spirit takes over the body of a kindly and above-reproach professor. A London crime wave ensues, with Scotland Yard always one step behind Mabuse. Wolfgang Preiss (as Mabuse and his alter ego), Peter Van Eyck and Klaus Kinski are featured in this heady combination of crime drama and sci-fi. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Holmes and Watson are again after Moriarty but this time Scotland Yard for some reason does not even suspect that he's the one who wants to get the necklace stolen from Cleopatra's tomb. Doesn't really hold together like most of the Holmes/Watson movies and is a rather odd interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story. ~ Tana Hobart, Rovi

Gene Pitney's hit title song for this courtroom drama became a bigger and more enduring success than the film in which it was repeatedly sung. The story takes place in postwar Germany in the village of Neustadt. A group of four drunken American soldiers come upon a teenage girl, Karin Steinhof (Christine Kaufmann), in the woods outside town. She had been trying to seduce her boyfriend, Frank Borgmann (Gerhart Lippert), but the inexperienced young man got flustered and left. The soldiers take advantage of the situation and are charged with rape. Karin's father Herr Steinhof (Hans Nielsen) wants the death penalty. Major Steve Garrett (Kirk Douglas), the attorney whom the military brings in to handle the defense, bullies Karin's parents, warning that he will put her on the stand. He also talks to townspeople and finds out that Karin has a reputation for standing undressed in front of windows as people pass by. Garrett builds a strong case, leading to a dramatic trial and a shocking conclusion. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Based on an actual post-war murder in Frankfurt, this standard docudrama by Rudolf Jugert is a serious treatment of the story as compared to the earlier, satirical film The Girl Rosemarie. The history of the case of Rosemarie, a hooker, and how she came to be strangled in her apartment is not completely clear. One of the suspects in the case was first charged, later acquitted, but never really free of an aura of culpability. British actress Belinda Lee plays the title role with her voice dubbed over in German. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
