John Thaw of Inspector Morse fame starred in this two-part British miniseries as renowned plastic surgeon Joe MacConnell. His torrid affair with his client Louise Ferman (Frances Barber) ended up having disastrous consequences on his wife and grown children. The story came to a head when McConnell's son James (Stuart Piper), a doctor in training, was involved with a crime that was inexorably linked to McConnell's infidelity. The first episode of Plastic Man, running 90 minutes, was seen in the U.K. on May 12, 1999; the concluding hour-long installment aired the following week. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In Paul Verhoeven's wild sci-fi action movie Total Recall, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a 21st-century construction worker who discovers that his entire memory of the past derives from a memory chip implanted in his brain. Schwarzenegger learns that he's actually a secret agent who had become a threat to the government, so those in power planted the chip and invented a domestic lifestyle for him. Once he has realized his true identity, he travels to Mars to piece together the rest of his identity, as well as to find the man responsible for his implanted memory. Verhoeven has created a fast, furious action film with Total Recall, filled with impressive stunts and (literally) eye-popping visuals. Though the film bears only a passing resemblance to the Philip K. Dick short story it was based on ("We Can Remember It For You Wholesale"), the movie is an entertaining, if very violent, ride. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Deceptions, a made-for-cable below-average erotic thriller, tells the familiar story of a homicide cop who falls for a beautiful suspect. When wealthy socialite Adrienne (Nicollette Sheridan) kills her husband Douglas (Marshall Colt), she claims self-defense. Nick Gentry (Harry Hamlin), the cop assigned to the case is suspicious but becomes obsessed with the sensual young woman. There is little new here and director Ruben Preuss spends little time with plot or character development, depending on the audience's interest in the extremely attractive cast, including Hamlin and Sheridan who were married at the time. Both Hamlin and Sheridan give stilted, wooden performances and surprisingly generate very little heat in their love scenes. Deceptions is a remarkably predictable, non-erotic thriller with little to recommend it. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

The once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between star Gene Wilder and director Leonard Nimoy resulted in the charmingly haphazard and anachronistic Funny About Love. Wilder plays political cartoonist Duffy Bergman, who falls in love with much-younger Meg (Christine Lahti) during a book-signing session. Once married, the old "clash of careers" bugaboo arises: Meg wants to continue working as a chef in a fancy New York restaurant, while Duffy would prefer that she think about starting a family. When it seems as though Meg may be incapable of bearing children, the self-involved Duffy impregnates earthy college coed Daphne (Mary Stuart Masterson). How a happy ending can grow from this complication is a puzzlement. Funny About Love was based--extremely loosely--on a speech once delivered by Chicago Tribune columnist Bob Greene. The laughs tend to be sporadic, though Stephen Toblowsky scores high marks as a jocular fertility doctor. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Pregnant with David's baby, Maddie (Cybill Shepherd) has decided to return from Chicago to LA via train--but she's still not sure whether or not she and David should resume their relationship. En route, Maddie meets a dweebish fellow passenger named Walter Bishop (Dennis Dugan), to whom she pours out her heart--and a generous supply of story exposition. Meanwhile, Agnes (Allyce Beasley) and Bert (Curtis Armstrong) anxiously await Maddie's return so that they can fill her in as to what occurred in the episodes she has missed--little suspecting that Maddie has a bit of startling news of her own! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This uneven comedy came and went quickly in commercial release. An American triathlete (Mark Neely) trains for an upcoming event, with the main competition coming from a pretty Russian exchange student (Terry Farrell). Billy Barty excels in his character role as a diminutive Russian, and the slapstick rivalry between the two event announcers and some sight gags help but fail to bring this feature to the finish line. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley) is thrilled and honored to receive the Small Businessman of the Year award. Naturally, he assumes that the award is given annually to people in medium-income businesses. His wife, Louise (Isabel Sanford), hasn't the heart to tell George that the word "small" in the award is meant to be taken literally -- all previous winners were decidedly on the short side. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Exploitation film vixen Claudia Jennings stars with Jocelyn Jones in this all-trash rip-off of Bonnie and Clyde with Jennings and Morgan playing a pair of sexy bank robbers who blast their way into countryside banks with a carload of fresh dynamite. Candy and Ellie-Jo team up and go on a bank-robbing crime spree. When Ellie-Jo is detained for shoplifting, the outlaw girls take Slim (Johnny Crawford) as a hostage.
