He Cinderellarizes her by bankrolling a full wardrobe and cosmetic makeover. Of course, the setup will be strictly platonic. A disarming modern-day fairy tale, Pretty Woman was the picture that made Julia Roberts a superstar. As charming as she is in her "giggling" sequences, Roberts' best scene is her triumphant return to a posh Rodeo Drive shop where she'd been previously snubbed. Keeping Pretty Woman afloat throughout is the buoyant direction of Garry Marshall and the always welcome presence of Marshall's stock company of actors, including Hector Elizondo as a stuffy but golden-hearted concierge. The Dead Pool is the fifth and (thus far) the last of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry movies. A sports pool is placing bets on which famous person will die next. Suddenly a serial killer who preys upon celebrities enters the scene, radically (and perhaps deliberately) changing the odds in the pool. As a celebrity of sorts, maverick cop Dirty Harry Callahan becomes a target of the killer, as does high-profile TV journalist Patricia Clarkson. Surprises are at a minimum in The Dead Pool; the film gets down to business quickly, moves logically if violently towards its climax (with a spectacular car-chase sequence thrown in for good measure), and delivers exactly what its fans expect. One major difference between this film and the earlier Dirty Harry epics is that the murders are committed in so outrageous a fashion that the picture seems at times to be a Freddie Krueger vehicle. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

But through his tough tutelage, Eastwood's lackadaisical platoon is whipped into a first-rate fighting machine, favoring teamwork over such New Age gobbledygook as "self-fulfillment." Jennifer and her sister were brutally raped a few years previously by a group of men, leaving her sister catatonic and Jennifer filled with a rage that is expressed in her disturbing artworks. Harry investigates the killings and the rapes, and one by one he dispatches Jennifer's rapists, one of whom is the son of the local police chief (which explains why the police have done little investigating). Based on the speculative novel by Joe Gores, the story concerns real-life detective novelist Dashiell Hammett (Frederic Forest), who early in his career is involved in a complex mystery that will profoundly influence his later works. While hacking away for pulp magazines, Hammett is asked by Jimmy Ryan (Peter Boyle), his old boss at the Pinkerton agency (and the model for the writer's "Continental Op" character), to help out on a particularly difficult case. Before long, Hammett is prowling the nooks and crannies of San Francisco in search of a missing Chinese prostitute-blackmailer (Lydia Lei). Among the several delectable "inside jokes" in Hammett is the presence of Elisha Cook, who'd appeared in the 1941 film adaptation of Hammett's Maltese Falcon, as Eli the Cab Driver. Red Stovall (Eastwood) is a would-be country singer who has been bouncing around the margins of the music business for years. With nowhere in particular to go, Red arrives at the failing Oklahoma farm of his sister for an extended visit, where her son Whit (Kyle Eastwood) quickly bonds with his uncle. However, it's obvious that Red is in very poor health, drinking heavily and breathing with difficulty, and when Red is invited to audition for the Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Whit tags along for the road trip to keep an eye on his ailing uncle. En route, Red and Whit are joined by Whit's grandfather (John McIntire) and another hopeful vocalist, Marlene (Alexa Kenin), who like Red is chasing her own dreams of stardom on the Opry. Despite its raucous ad campaign, Bronco Billy is at base a wistful character study, avoiding the usual trappings of car chases and redneck villains and offering quiet chuckles instead of belly laughs. Among his break-out buddies are the Anglin Brothers (Fred Ward and Jack Thibeau), with whom he'd served in other lockups, and several others who've got their own special reasons to despise the sadistic McGoohan. Batwoman (Katherine Victor) is a costumed crime fighter who leads a gang of beautiful Batgirls in a neverending crusade to "fight against evil with all sincerity." Her arch-enemy, Rat Fink (Richard Banks), sends henchmen to drug one of the Batgirls at a nightclub and hold her for ransom. Rat Fink wants revenge against Batwoman for foiling so many of his criminal schemes, so he threatens to dispose of the kidnapped girl if the heroine doesn't help him steal a very valuable new invention. The Ayjax Development Corporation has created an atomic hearing aid that hasn't been awarded a patent yet in the United States because it can be used for eavesdropping on telephone conversations, and it's downright explosive if exposed to cobalt. Rat Fink wants it for these very reasons, but Batwoman outwits his henchmen and escapes with the Batgirl. Understanding the danger that the world would be in if the device fell into the wrong hands, the Batgirls are sent to Ayjax to guard the prototype. Rat Fink's men hoodwink the ladies by serving them soup laced with experimental "happy pills," causing fits of go-go dancing, and soon the forces of evil have the atomic hearing aid in their clutches. Batwoman must save the day, and holds a seance to consult the spirits of the dead for help. Can Rat Fink be stopped or will the Batgirls be distracted by a wild rock & roll beach party? After D.C. Cut-and-paste schlock producer Jerry Warren patched together yet another of his patented Mexican imports with segments of a much older Chilean horror film to make this goofy supernatural thriller, padding it out with newly-shot footage featuring a slumming John Carradine. Essentially another crawling-hand creeper, the Mexican footage involves a cursed hand statue which possesses the souls of assorted innocent bystanders, while the Chilean portions have to do with a secret suicide society and are loosely based on R.L. Stephenson's The Suicide Club. The Chilean portions seem a bit more interesting and surreal, but the added footage (with Carradine) is just plain ridiculous; the end product is impossible to follow, wrapped up with an even less-comprehensible twist ending. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi
