Born into a military family (his father was an officer in the Mexican revolution), Jorge Negrete attended the Mexican equivalent of West Point from 1925 to 1928. Upon graduation, however, Negrete became fascinated with music, taking singing lessons from the celebrated Jose Pierson. While still in his very early twenties, he became a star on clear-channel radio station XER, performing a mixture of Mexican and Cuban songs. Known to his fans as "El Charro Cantor," he made his first film in 1937, then headlined a Spanish-language network program in North America. His only Hollywood appearance was in the 1947 MGM musical Fiesta. Jorge Negrete was married to singer Elisa Chrisy and to Mexican film luminary Maria Felix, who became his widow when he died of cirrhosis at the age of 42. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie GuideOne of Mexico's most beloved singers and actors, Jorge Negrete was the star of a long string of musical-Westerns, and appeared in over 40 motion pictures before his untimely death in 1953; he was only 42 years old. This minimalist Mexican romantic comedy offers the premise that affairs of the heart are dictated by the full moon. Under the lunar lumniscence, George Negrete and Raquel Rojas meet. It is love at first sight, but the ardor cools whenever the cycles of the moon fluctuate. All turns out well in the end, but not without a few emotional "blackouts". Regionally distributed in the US upon its first release, When the Stars Travel occasionally resurfaces on Spanish-language cable TV. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Dos Tippos de Cuidado (Two Careful Fellows) teams a pair of very popular Mexican musical stars. Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante play a couple of wandering vagabonds who show up at a ranch. Here they try to avoid getting involved with the local female population, but it's a losing battle. Among the ladies are Carmelita Gonzalez and Yolanda Varela, two very good reasons for one to break a promise to oneself. The script was cowritten by regional comedian Carlos Orellana, who also plays an amusing character role. Dos Tippos de Cuidado was the last starring feature of Jorge Negrete, who died in 1953. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The English title of the Mexican Un Gallo en Corral Ajeno is Straying Rooster. This is as apt a description as any of the leading character, played by popular musical star Jorge Negrete. He plays an eccentric millionaire who whimsically poses as a turkey thief. While in this guise, he is hired to pose for an avant-garde sculptress (Gloria Marin, in real life, the former Mrs. Negrete). The freewheeling storyline drifts amiably all over Mexico, from big-city skyscrapers to dusty cattle ranches. The most memorable aspect of Un Gallo en Corral Ajeno is the versatile cinematography of the late, great Gabriel Figueroa. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Two of Mexico's most popular screen attractions are teamed in Huvia Roja. Jorge Negrete heads the cast as a self-involved mercenary who kills with abandon and tramples on the sensibilities of everyone he meets. Elsa Aguirre co-stars as a religious young lady who has the misfortune to fall in love with the mercenary. Third-billed Alicia Caro delivers a powerhouse performance as a girl whom Negrete humiliates in public, the first stepping stone towards his own downfall. Despite the uncharacteristically unsympathetic nature of his role, Jorge Negrete does what his fans expect of him by singing three sprightly tunes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This Mexican musical is a remake of the popular 1936 film of the same name. South-of-the-Border film-favorite Jorge Negrete plays the leading role, a likeable ranchero in love with a pretty orphaned girl (Lilia del Valle). Negrete carries on a friendly rivalry for the girl's affections with handsome Eduardo Noriega, but there's little doubt as to the outcome of this romantic triangle. The film takes full advantage of the limited but attractive Cinecolor process, offering vivid picturizations of such traditional Mexican diversions as a fiesta, a "dancing duel," and a surprisingly bloodless cockfight. A big hit in Mexico, Alla en el Rancho Grande also cleaned up in Spanish-speaking American communities. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Two great Latin singing stars team up in this musical melodrama directed by the innovative Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel. Gerardo (Jorge Negrete) and his friend Demetrio (Julio Villarreal) are a pair of footloose cowboys in turn-of-the-century Mexico who are looking for work after escaping from prison on dubious charges. Gerardo persuades Jose (Francisco Jambrina), an tycoon from Argentina who is looking for oil in Mexico, to give work to himself and his friends, but just as their fortunes are on the rise, the oilman disappears and is feared murdered. Jose's sister Mercedes (Libertad Lamarque) travels to Mexico to find out what's become of him, and when she learns that Gerardo has taken over as manager in Jose's absence, she's convinced that Gerardo and his pals are to blame. Wanting to know more about Gerardo and his cronies, she takes a job as a singer as "Gran Casino," a rowdy nightclub near the oil fields; in time, she strikes up a romance with the good-hearted roughneck and learns just who her brother's enemies really are. Gran Casino was Luis Bunuel's first project after settling in Mexico in the wake of the Spanish Civil War and an unsuccessful attempt to seek asylum in the United States; an uncharacteristically conventional story which was not well suited to Bunuel's talents (and a musical to boot), Gran Casino fared poorly at the box office, and it was two years before he'd get to make his next film, El Gran Calavera. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Mexican singing star Jorge Negrete essays the title role in El Rebelde. When his father is murdered, young Negrete vows revenge against society. Intending to get even with the wealthy rancher responsible for his father's death, Negrete poses as the music teacher of the rancher's pretty daughter Maria Elena Marques. Falling in love with the girl, our hero decides to mend his ways, but is still obliged to kidnap the heroine before her father will consent to their marriage. There's a strong possibility that no one intended El Rebelde to be taken seriously. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Una Carta de Amor (Love Letters) is an overlong, but never dull, Mexican romantic yarn. Set in the 19th century, the film is told in flashback from the point-of-view of condemned prisoner Jorge Negrete. Facing execution for "crimes" against the repressive government, Negrete recalls happier times with his late wife Gloria Marin. He remembers how Marin, a political naif, eventually stood nobly by his side during his insurrectionist activities. Also remembered in tear-stained detail is Marin's ultimate self-sacrifice on behalf of her husband. Director Miguel Zacarias also wrote the screenplay, doing a masterful job in both capacities. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Historia de un Gran Amor was one of the most successful Mexican productions of 1943, a hit with audiences and critics alike. Jorge Negrete plays Manuel, a poor boy of indeterminate lineage who falls in love with a wealthy senorita (Gloria Marin). Told by the girl's father (Julio Villareal) that he isn't a worthy suitor, Manuel vows to make something of himself and return for his love. Years later, a much-richer Manuel rides back into town, only to discover that his sweetheart has married another. But their love is too strong to be impeded by matrimonial bonds, and hero and heroine declare undying devotion to one another. Alas, their romance is foredoomed, thanks to the girl's jealous, short-tempered husband. Historia de un Gran Amor was based on El Nino de la Bola, a novel by Antonio De Alarcon. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Mexican El Penon de las Animas (The Rock of Souls) was accurately described by several reviewers as a South-of-the-Border "Romeo and Juliet". The film's star-crossed lovers, separated by a variety of vendettas and family-feuds, find lasting peace only in death. Appearing as a rival lover is Rene Cardona, who also pursued a successful career as a director. All in all, the principal attraction of El Penon de las Animas was 27-year-old Maria Felix in her first film starring role. Felix would remain a Mexican movie favorite well into the 1960s, retiring in 1970 upon the death of her fifth husband. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- René Cardona, Sr., Maria Felix, (more)
