While films about polygamous men who don't bother telling their wives about their other wives are not uncommon, those concerning polyandrous women doing the same thing are rare. This featherweight romantic comedy from Mexican director Jaime Humberto Hermosillo is one of those films. Esmeralda is passionate about life and simply has too much love in her heart to be monogamous. She is just about to marry her sixth husband, a student named Pedro, when one of her other five husbands calls the police and she is arrested. She tells her story to the stern judge Solorio, and her reasons for marrying each husband are revealed in flashback. It doesn't take long for the judge to become as enchanted by her as the others. Like other Hermosillo films, this one is filled with inside-jokes for film buffs. For example, one of Esmeralda's husbands is a gay man masquerading behind the marriage to appease his overbearing mother. This is a direct reference to Hermosillo's Doña Herlinda and Her Son. In the story's final segments, the director pays tribute to Gene Kelly's famous dance scene from Singing in the Rain via the song "Amorcito Corazon." ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

A poetic young man's life and mental health are destroyed by his scheming, jealous older brother. This Gothic, psychological melodrama follows the events that caused his descent into madness. The decision about what to do with the ashes of their recently deceased deadbeat father plays a central role in the fraternal turmoil. At 21, Esteban is the oldest son. He eventually returns to his hometown of Curerenavaca one year after his father's funeral. Esteban loves travelling around. He arrogantly calls himself a writer and considers himself among the intellectual elite. But despite his grandiose pretensions, Esteban is decidedly lacking in talent; however, his good-hearted, humble little brother Juan is brimming with it. Unfortunately, Juan is a tad naive and therefore susceptible to Esteban's manipulative influence. Thanks to Esteban, the formerly devoted younger brother leaves his family's grand home and his financially struggling mother to live in a ghetto with his lover Alba. Meanwhile, to make ends meet, Juan's mother takes in a pair of Catholic theologians. Even after the family dynamics have dramatically changed, Esteban continues his wicked machinations and this leads to tragedy for Juan. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

In this tender family drama, Lola is a single mother living in Mexico City who earns her living as a street vendor. She and the other unlicensed vendors like her must keep an eagle eye out for the police, and at the same time must try to eke out a living selling clothing irregulars. Despite that, she has a good relationship with her daughter. It's probably just as well that her rock-guitarist boyfriend went away. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this story, a group of citizens of the town of Culiacan have proposed their local hero, Jesus Malverde, for sainthood. Of course, to qualify, they have to prove that he existed, and that the stories which depict him as a kind of Robin Hood figure in 19th century Mexico are true. A series of flashbacks takes us into the 19th century, and the hero's shenanigans on behalf of the poor and the oppressed. In one episode, the whole population of the town get together to keep him from being captured by the corrupt, cruel governor of the state of Sinaloa. Many of the tales told about Malverde contradict themselves, and while his historical reality becomes less and less credible, his importance as a symbol of just rebellion against oppression grows more and more apparent. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
