George and Mildred originated as a spin-off of the popular British sitcom Man About the House. Thus, the feature-length version of George and Mildred can be labelled a spin-off of a spin-off. Brian Murphy plays George, landlord of an apartment building chock-full of lechers and satyrs. Yootha Joyce (who died shortly before the release of this film) plays Mildred, George's sexless, humorless spouse. We must have a plot, so George finds himself mistaken for a notorious assassin. The American equivalent of George and Mildred was The Ropers....a spin-off of Three's Company....which was the American equivalent of Man About the House. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The debut film of director Harold Becker was this low-budget romance that won acclaim for its script by Alan Sillitoe. Simon Rouse stars as Tony Bradmore, a skilled thief who falls for Doris Randall (Victoria Tennant), the stunningly beautiful daughter of a wealthy rag dealer (Leslie Sands). Given Tony's choice of profession, their relationship does get an enthusiastic endorsement from all concerned. Although The Ragman's Daughter (1972) was given a cursory North American release two years after its completion, Becker's subsequent efforts such as The Onion Field (1979) and Taps (1981) would fare considerably better at the box office. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

The Boy Friend began life as Sandy Wilson's small-scale pastiche of British musical comedies of the 1920s. When the play was brought to America in 1954, its star was the
teenage Julie Andrews. Because The Boy Friend requires a minimum of sets, props, and costumes, it has become a favorite of amateur theater groups throughout the world. But director Ken Russell, notorious for his onscreen excesses, abandoned the film's simplicity. He fashioned a humongous parody of the Busby Berkeley film musicals of the 1930s, staged on a scale that made Berkeley seem stylistically modest. Fashion model Twiggy plays Polly Browne, an aspiring musical comedy star, working as stage manager of a production of The Boy Friend. She is transformed into a star when she replaces leading lady Rita Monroe (Glenda Jackson, unbilled), who twists her ankle seconds before the curtain goes up. Before the evening is over, Polly is scampering over outsized sets, and ducking around seemingly thousands of chorus girls and boys. Christopher Gable, who plays Polly's on-stage leading man, also choreographed the lavish musical numbers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Devils was the Ken Russell film version of the controversial play by John Whiting. The story, based on Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudun, concerns controversial 17th century French priest Urbain Grandier, whose radical political and religious notions and profligate sex life earn him many enemies. When a group of nuns appears to have been "bewitched" by Grandier, his rivals feed on the resulting mass hysteria, using this incident as an excuse to have the priest arrested. Refusing to confess to being in league with Satan and to renounce his "heretical" views, Grandier undergoes appalling tortures, and is finally burned at the stake. Vanessa Redgrave co-stars as the head nun. Due to censorship issues in virtually every country in which The Devils has been released, running times vary greatly. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A student is caught up in the turbulence of political activism and campus protest. Mike Corbet (Michael Smith) joins a group that plans to delay the induction of draftees from reaching the Iocal military induction center. His girlfriend Lee (Lesley Gilbrun) is concerned for Mike's safety as anti-war protesters and police clash at the scene. Professor Williams (Tom Maier) is the sympathetic instructor who observes the student protest. A nude scene seems to have been inserted merely for exploitation value and to seek an "X" rating to draw more viewers. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

This British comedy drama of the lower classes features actors with such thick cockney accents that some prints of the film were subtitled. James Booth stars as Charlie, a merchant seaman who returns home to the East End after two years to find that his wife Maggie (Barbara Windsor) has taken up with another man, a married bus driver named Bert (George Sewell). After taking his brother Fred (Roy Kinnear) hostage in a pub, Charlie gets a reunion with Maggie, who shows up pushing a pram. It seems she's given birth to a child, and the father's identity is uncertain. Charlie and Maggie reconcile, but not before a vicious row with Bert, who doesn't want to give up his girl. Windsor, a BAFTA Best Actress nominee for her role, also performed the film's title song. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
