First shown on Canadian television in 1991, the two-part A Conspiracy of Silence premiered in America in the Summer of 1992. In 1971, a Cree woman is murdered in a small Manitoba community. Protecting their "own", the white townsfolk choose to close ranks around the four killers and protect them with a cloak of silence. Only after 16 years have passed and the case is reopened by young constable Stephen Ouimette are the witnesses to the murder emboldened enough to speak out. The cast of Conspirary of Silence is dotted with some of Canada's finest character actors, including leading man Ouimette, Jonathan Potts, Neil Munro, Dawn Greenhaigh and Maury Chaykin. Part one was telecast over the CBS network on July 26, 1992; Part two followed on July 28. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A pair of American pilots are forced to cooperate with their Soviet counterparts on a mission to destroy a Middle Eastern nuclear weapons site in this predictable, low-budget action sequel. The first Iron Eagle's rebellious fly boy Cooper (Mark Humphreys) has returned, as has his gruff mentor Chappy (Louis Gossett Jr. as yet another military man). They must work with two Russian pilots, one of whom is a beautiful woman that handsome young Cooper naturally sets out to woo. An extended build-up, including the requisite government conspiracy, leads to the climactic final battle. Average-at-best production values fail to elevate the film above a derivative screenplay, although the film did find enough success to produce further installments in the series. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Veteran Canadian actor Gordon Pinsent handled the direction of John and the Missus. And who with better right? Pinsent also wrote the novel upon which his screenplay was based. John Munn (Pinsent) is a Newfoundland miner whose town faces extermination when the local copper mine is closed. Everyone else in town is resigned to relocate, but John stands firm, hoping to salvage the home of his father. Jackie Burroughs co-stars as John's wife, or "Missus," who backs up her husband's near-hopeless cause. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The present unfolds along with scenes from the past in this intense psychological drama about Edna (Martha Henry), a woman in the hospital who each day writes down her memories. Edna cannot (or will not) talk to her doctor, and nurses have to take care of her ordinary needs, including making her eat when meals arrive. Edna's stark hospital surroundings give way to the bright colors of her homelife as her memories surface while she writes. She is a devoted housewife, an excellent cook, and in love with her husband. Her husband Harry (Neil Munro) often compliments her on her cooking, fills their conversations with his life at work, and they seem quite normal if perhaps a little boring. But then something happens that will change Edna's attitude toward herself, resulting in a hospital stay, and her stubborn unwillingness to talk. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Confidential a Canadian-made, low-budget, but stylish thriller directed by Bruce Pittman, is the familiar story of a detective forced to solve a crime. Reporter Hugh Jameson (Neil Munro) disappears while investigating a murder that occurred 30 years ago. A reporter who is interested in the case finds that he now must solve both murders, but much to his surprise, he himself becomes a target. Though it was produced on a shoe-string budget, this is nonetheless a stylish, interesting thriller with decent production values, and Director Pittman makes the most of his cast and his interesting, script. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

Created by humorist Neil Munro, Scottish barge captain Para Handy and his crew were featured in a number of popular British TV sitcoms, including BBC1's 1966 offering The Vital Spark (the title referred to Capt. Handy's dilapidated boat). Originating as a one-off on the Comedy Playhouse anthology, this incarnation of Handy and company lasted 12 episodes, which aired from 1966 to 1967. The star of the series Roddy McMillan, revived his Para Handy characterization when The Vital Spark resurfaced on BBC1 in 1973, yielding six more half-hour episodes, and one hour-long special. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
