Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (Pictures at an Exhibition) died in 1881, at the age of 42 - leaving his opera Khovanshchina unfinished and unperformed. In time, Dmitri Shostakovich took up the challenge of polishing off the finished work, which constitutes a musical drama about the transformation of Russian society via Peter the Great. In this stage production of Khovanshchina by the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Stein Winge uses a "modernist" production design to evoke the harsh and uncompromising themes of the original work. This stage opus by Giancarlo del Monaco combines two separate and ostensibly unrelated operas - Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci - into a single production, by virtue of their shared verismo style. Jesús López Cobos directs for the stage; Violeta Urmana, Dragana Jugovic and Marco di Felice co-star in the Cavalleria portion, while Vladimir Galouzine, María Bayo and Carlo Guelfi co-star in the Pagliacci segments. Emilio Sagi's unusual stage production of Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville unearths the comic aspects of the original work and opts for flashy set design, full of blindingly bright pop color and a circus-like atmosphere, and interpreted by an all-Hispanic cast. The story remains essentially unchanged: Count Almaviva - set on wooing the stunning Rosina - receives assistance from the title character, also known as Figaro. The barber helps Almaviva pull Rosina away from her guardian, {%Dr. Bartolo). Juan Diego Florez stars as Almaviva, Maria Bayo as Rosina, and Pietro Spagnoli as Figaro.
