Gioachino Rossini adapted his 1817 opera La Cenerentola from the classic fairy tale Cinderella, but famously insisted on removing all supernatural elements from the narrative; the resultant work arguably attained as much popularity as anything else he had done. That opera comes to life in this 2008 stage production by the Gran Teatre del Liceu; it stars American performer Joyce di Donato in the title role (a character also known as Angelina); Juan Diego Flórez as Don Ramiro and David Menéndez as Dandini. Emilio Sagi's unusual stage production of Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville unearths the comic aspects of the original work and opts for flashy set design, full of blindingly bright pop color and a circus-like atmosphere, and interpreted by an all-Hispanic cast. The story remains essentially unchanged: Count Almaviva - set on wooing the stunning Rosina - receives assistance from the title character, also known as Figaro. The barber helps Almaviva pull Rosina away from her guardian, {%Dr. Bartolo). Juan Diego Florez stars as Almaviva, Maria Bayo as Rosina, and Pietro Spagnoli as Figaro.
