Trendy young playwright and screenwriter Conor McPherson (I Went Down, 1997) makes his directing debut with this understated comedy. Widowed fish-and-chips shop owner George Beneventi (Brian Cox) lives in a sleepy coastal town along with his three children. Eldest son Frank (Peter McDonald) helps with the shop, college student Carmel (Valerie Spelman) is involved with a lecherous philosophy professor, and younger brother Joe (Laurence Kinlan) causes trouble at school. Being the off-season, George is having a hard time gathering the funds to pay his smooth but deadly bookie, "Simple" Simon McCurdie (Brendan Gleeson). Frank, who seethes with the knowledge that his dad is indebted to the thug, stages an inept though miraculously successful robbery of the criminal's lair. Meanwhile, Joe befriends Damien, the new kid in town, only to discover that his pal is a psychopath. This film was screened at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

Paul Quinn scripted and made his directorial debut with this period drama about middle-aged schoolteacher Kieran Johnson (James Caan), who finds evidence indicating that his real father was an Irish farmer and not a French seaman as he had been told. Since his mute and paralyzed mother offers no answers, he investigates by traveling to an Irish village with his teenage nephew (Jacob Tierney). After this prologue, the film flashes back to the family roots: Kieran's mother Fiona Flynn (Moya Farrelly) back home from convent school, catches the eye of dirt tenant farmer Kieran O'Day (Aidan Quinn). Their romance gets underway despite disapprovals from family and friends. Shown at 1998 film fests (Montreal, Toronto). ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Once at the resort Monica befriends Abbie, an American marine biologist who helps her to cope with her feelings. At the same time, the resort caretaker tries to seduce Monica. Shelley loathes Abbie, and sure that the Yank is a wicked witch, begins practicing a bit of black magic herself. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The friendship between a pair of buskers is fractured when one of them gets engaged. Prior to that Jean and Kate, who made their living performing comedy routines on the street, were thick as thieves until Jean surprised Kate by telling her that she has accepted the proposal of her musician lover Martin. Whereas Kate is quietly devastated, Jean's upper-middle-class mother is delighted and immediately sets out to prepare a grand and perfect wedding. Much of the ensuing comedy of this Irish-German film comes when Jean has a panic attack and makes a bad choice, the repercussions of which affect not only her relationship with Martin but also with Kate. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The owner of a British nightclub attempts to do the impossible by coaxing a legendary Irish tenor out of retirement for a once-in-a-lifetime show in this engagingly quirky comedy. The owner, Mickey O'Neill, is particularly desperate to land a performance by the great Josef Locke, as his already questionable reputation was ruined when he booked an impostor claiming to be Locke. Now only providing a show by the real thing can make up for it. Trouble is, Locke fled England several decades before to avoid charges of tax evasion, and would face immediate arrest upon his return. Naturally, the comedy emerges from O'Neill's desperate attempts to convince Locke to participate in the scheme. Much of the film's charm comes from the presentation of eccentric but believable characters, particularly Locke himself -- a real historical figure given warm life by Ned Beatty, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for his performance. The film as a whole manages a similar balancing act between realism and comic fantasy, grounding even the less believable aspect of the narrative in strongly observed local color. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide
