The physical and spiritual dimensions of the cycle of life come together in this metaphoric tale from filmmaker Mercedes Moncada Rodriguez. The Miskitos are native peoples who live along the coast of Nicaragua in what was once called the Mosquito Coast. The Miskitos believe that if someone dies while in the ocean, they are taken away by mermaids, and their soul travels on within the creatures of the sea. A Miskito diver drowns while harvesting valuables in the bay, and his soul is taken up by a sea turtle. The turtle is caught by local fishermen, and when a woman eats the turtle, a bit of the diver's soul makes its way into her body. The woman gives birth to a son named Sinbad, and the boy grows up to be a diver. As the spirit of the diver who preceded him lives on in Sinbad, the younger man is also attracted to the mermaids, who played a key role in making him into the man he has become. La Sirena y el Buzo (aka The Mermaid and the Diver) was an official selection at the 2009 American Film Institute Latin American Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
