Two friends from Cuba hatch a plan to launch a zombie extermination service after their picturesque island is overrun by the living dead in this satirical horror film from director Alejandro Brugués (Personal Belongings). It's the anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, and as the hungry undead make an unwelcomed appearance, best friends Juan (Alexis Días de Villegas) and Lázardo (Jorge Molina) decide to parlay their skills for dispatching zombies into a professional career. As the government attempts to maintain public order by blaming the fracas on Americans who they claim are attempting to topple the current regime, Juan and Lazardo rally the troops, gather their weapons, and prepare to make a killing by ridding Cuba of zombies one shambling, flesh-eating corpse at a time. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The physical and spiritual dimensions of the cycle of life come together in this metaphoric tale from filmmaker Mercedes Moncada Rodriguez. The Miskitos are native peoples who live along the coast of Nicaragua in what was once called the Mosquito Coast. The Miskitos believe that if someone dies while in the ocean, they are taken away by mermaids, and their soul travels on within the creatures of the sea. A Miskito diver drowns while harvesting valuables in the bay, and his soul is taken up by a sea turtle. The turtle is caught by local fishermen, and when a woman eats the turtle, a bit of the diver's soul makes its way into her body. The woman gives birth to a son named Sinbad, and the boy grows up to be a diver. As the spirit of the diver who preceded him lives on in Sinbad, the younger man is also attracted to the mermaids, who played a key role in making him into the man he has become. La Sirena y el Buzo (aka The Mermaid and the Diver) was an official selection at the 2009 American Film Institute Latin American Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A Spanish tourist looking for adventure in Ecuador crosses paths with a cynical student and a man seeking to come to terms with the recent death of his grandmother in director Tania Hermida's understated tale of love, friendship, and the journey to gain a better understanding of who we really are. Esperanza is a Spanish tourist who longs to experience life and explore new worlds. Pessimistic Ecuadorian university student Tristeza is tired of her picturesque South American country, and can't shake the feeling that the outside world is calling to her. After being stranded in the baron countryside due to a transit strike, Espernaza and Tristeza attempt to hitch a ride back to civilization. Their journey soon takes an unexpected turn, however, when the pair makes the acquaintance of a man transporting the ashes of his dearly departed grandmother. Now, as mortality and compassion factor into the soul searching trek, the two girls are soon prompted to reevaluate their expectations regarding their current quest for fulfillment. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The plight of marginalized youth who inhabits a small town in southern Spain is explored in the sophomore effort from El Traje director Alberto Rodríguez. Granted a weekend furlough from the juvenile detention center for the express purpose of attending his older brother Santacana's (Vicente Romero) wedding, aimless 16-year-old Tano (Juan José Ballesta) plans to join his best friend, Richi (Jesús Carroza), in a marathon session of boozing, getting stoned, and bedding every available female in sight. Though Tano still has the familiar urge to party hardy with his friends, gone in him are the thuggish instincts that drive his mates to rape, rob, and beat up anyone and everyone who stands in his way. As the events of the weekend unfold to reveal a town tiring of being victimized by the aggressive crowd that Tano used to run with, the revelation of where his life of crime is truly leading him forces Tano to reevaluate his violent past and take control of his future. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
