This saucy Austrian comedy-drama is based on the venerable stage play by Gustav Kadelburg. Helga Martin stars as Hedwig, the rebellious adoptive daughter of the Schimek clan. Hedwig rises to fame in fin-de-siecle Vienna by becoming a cabaret star, gaining notoreity by revealing more of her lovely legs than was acceptable at the time. Her outraged stepfather inaugurates legal action to end Hedwige's stage career, with lively results. Enhancing the charm of Famile Schimek is its utilization of vintage drinking songs and ballads as background music. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The indefatigable Willi Forst was back in 1957 with Die Unentschuldigte Stunde (The Unexcused Hour). Following his usual pattern, Forst not only directed the picture, but also collaborated on the screenplay. Based on the popular stage play by Stefan Bekeffi and A. Stella, the story concerns a pretty young student (Erika Remberg) who marries her professor (Adrian Hoven). Our heroine continues pursuing her academic career, causing all sorts of complications for her husband. The film's title refers to the fact that student and teacher can never enjoy a moment alone -- unless it is an "unexcused absence." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Officially listed as an Austrian film, Verliebte Leute (Loving Couples) was actually an Austro-German co-production. Through a series of comic complications, a humble telephone operator (Hannelore Bollmann) is mistaken for the daughter of a millionaire (Oskor Sims). Thus, when the chauffeur (Peter Passetti) falls in love with the girl, he feels he must prove himself worthy of her "station in life." Several misunderstandings later, the truth comes out, but love conquers all, as the audience knew it would in Reel One. The most striking aspect of Verliebte Leute is its breathtaking location photography. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

German film luminary Hans Moser plays the title role in Der Onkel aus America. Moser is cast as a bombastic Texan who throws his German nephew's household into a tizzy. Since it is assumed that every Texan is a millionaire, Moser's relatives fall over themselves to curry favor with their "wealthy" Uncle. Alas, the gentleman from Texas doesn't have a penny to his name. Even so, just the thought that prosperity is just around the corner prompts Moser's family into rediscovering their own moneymaking potential -- and enriching themselves in the process. Der Onkel aus America is a remake of a 1931 German comedy, also directed by Carl Boese. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Wiener Madeln is the story of 19th-century Austrian composer Carl Michael Zihrer. Though not as famous as such contemporaries as Strauss, Zihrer had one "hit" waltz to his credit, which enabled him to sustain his popularity for nearly 20 years. The film's highlight is a "battle of the bands," pitting Zihrer's aggregation against John Philip Sousa's orchestra. Starring as Zihrer is Teutonic film favorite Willie Forst, who also produced and directed. Completed in 1945, Wiener Madeln nearly became a "lost film" during the confusion following the end of the war. It took Forst four years to piece together an acceptable print from four different, incomplete negatives -- and nearly as long to secure legal clearance to do so. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
