It probably takes an intimate acquaintance with East Germany's famously awful car, a smoky, noisy two-cylinder lawnmower on wheels, the Trabant 601, to fully appreciate the jokes in this celebrity-filled comedy. In the story, Gunther (German television star Thomas Gotttschalk) is an East German inventor who has journeyed with his homely car to an inventor's convention in Hollywood: he has figured out a way to get his Trabbi to run on turnip juice and zoom like a sports car. When his odd car is stolen, he tries to get it back, but L.A. and it's culture are alien to him and he is very much a fish out of water, despite the friendly advice he receives from Billy Dee Williams as a knowledgeable parking-lot attendant. Look for cameos by Milton Berle and Dom DeLuise, among others. This Trabbi film is a sequel to the enormously popular comedy Go, Trabi, Go. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Good performances are said to have lifted the German crime drama Heisse Spur St. Pauli beyond the limits of its fairly conventional story. Two brothers, who are a different as night and day, are fated for a reunion. One of them is a decent enough fellow; he drives a taxi and is trying to save money to start his own business. The other has just escaped prison, and is after his brother's money. The convict's wife is separated from him, and the taxi-driving brother has been courting her. That's reason enough for the convict to hold her hostage in order to get his brother's money. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Another pornographic film wrapped up in a pseudo-documentary cover, this movie discusses what happens to girls who have venereal diseases, non-professional abortions, traumatic frigidity and who have been raped. Each of the girls' many complaints lands them in a gynecologist's office. The discussions of their problems are clinical, but the flashback sequences are purely hardcore. Production values in this German language film are high, as it was intended to be shown in mainstream theaters. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

A female reporter masquerades as a high school student to write a story on the youth of today. The students spend the majority of their time playing practical jokes on their peers and teachers. The reporter falls for Dr. Wagner, the idolized and idealistic educator who is the favorite of the student body and who, out of respect from the students, is usually exempt from their pranks. Other teacher types that nearly every high school student has encountered are accurately portrayed: there's the severe disciplinarian, the narcissist, the reactionary, and the one just hanging on hoping to retire with no further trouble before the pension goes into effect. At one point in the movie, the journalist/student is subjected to a mild spanking at the hands of her peers for a minor infraction, hence the title of this light comedy. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

This macabre tale of mystery and murder concerns a withdrawn nine-year-old boy and his baby sister. His parents leave her in care of the boy when they go out, and the baby starts to cry. To stop the incessant crying, he puts her head in a plastic bag, removing it just before she suffocates. One time he leaves the bag on too long and the child dies. The panic-stricken lad hides the body and makes up a preposterous story about a strange intruder. The police listen to the yearn and determine the young boy to be the main suspect. He confesses and leads the authorities to the body, only to discover it has vanished. The police go away thinking the boy has nothing more than an overactive imagination. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who managed to escape from an allegedly impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. At the beginning of the film, the Nazis gather all their most devious and troublesome POWs and place them at a new prison camp, which was designed to be impervious to escapes. Immediately, the prisoners develop a scheme where they will leave the camp by building three separate escape tunnels. Richard Attenborough is the British soldier who masterminds the whole plan, and who commands his motley squad--featuring Charles Bronson as a Polish trench-digging expert, James Garner as an American with a talent for theft, Donald Pleasence as a masterful forger, and Steve McQueen as an American rebel--through the construction of the tunnels and, eventually, their escape. An epic adventure film, The Great Escape runs nearly three hours, featuring a rousing Elmer Bernstein score and exciting action sequences -- including a notorious motorcycle chase between McQueen and the Nazis -- the likes of which had never been seen before in Hollywood productions. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
