Feeling personally responsible when one of his patients is charged with the murder of a cleaning lady, Monk's psychiatrist Dr. Kroger (Stanley Kamel) retires from practice. This of course sends Monk (Tony Shalhoub) into a tailspin: Not only has he been "abandoned" by Kroger, but he now must endure the tortuous process of finding another shrink. If for no other reason that to get Kroger back on the job, Monk determines to solve the murder--and in the process ends up kidnapped by a drug smuggler who didn't even know the dead woman. Author John Ricca (Harry Groener) is murdered, apparently for writing a nasty, warts-and-all biography of legendary Kung Fu movie star Sonny "The Cobra" Chow. In the course of his investigation, Monk (Tony Shalhoub) gathers evidence which seems to indicate beyond doubt that Ricca was murdered by Sonny Chow himself. But this theory may not hold up in court: Sonny Chow has been dead for six years! Before this baffling case is solved, Monk has a too-close-for-comfort confrontation with the real killer, and ends up being buried alive--a grisly fate by anyone's standards, but especially so for a man with a crippling fear of both dirt and the dark. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Not long after being voted "employee of the month" at a suburban Mega-Mart retail store, Edna Coruthers (Marie Cheatham) is killed in what appears to be a freak accident. Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is called in to investigate by the store's security manager Joe Christie (Enrico Colantoni), who suspects foul play. The assignment proves most distasteful for Monk, inasmuch as Christie is his ex-partner, who'd been thrown off the force for stealing drugs. Despite his animosity toward Christie, Monk manages to figure out that Edna was, indeed, murdered--but NOT for what seems to be the most obvious motive. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
