In this elaborately mounted seafaring adventure, Rolfe (Richard Widmark) is a Viking leader with the cunning and devious mind of a pirate. Rolfe tells others sailors of "The Mother of Voices," a mammoth bell made of gold and as tall as three men, but he adds enough incorrect details to throw them off the proper trail. However, Aly Mansuh (Sidney Poitier), the leader of a group of ambitious Moors, sees through Rolfe's story, and soon the two are in a breakneck race to be the first to capture the precious bell. Gambling-casino owner George Anclitis (Henry Lascoe) has two big problems on his hands: His second-in-command Slim Marcus (H.M. Wynant) has been caught cheating in a high-stakes card game, and Slim's girlfriend Vivian (Jeanne Moody) has been murdered. Hoping to kill several birds with a single stone, Anclitis uses a hot gun and a few ounces of marijuana to frame Betty Roberts (Joan O'Brien), a cigarette girl who "knows too much", for Vivian's murder. It's a personal matter for Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) when an off-duty police officer is killed by two stickup men in a downtown bar. The criminal pair has been terrorizing taverns throughout the LA area, but now it looks as though their days of freedom are numbered, thanks to a tipster who provides the detectives with some very valuable information. Featured in the cast is Paul Brinegar, best known to TV fans as "Wishbone" on the long-running western series Rawhide.
