This is a rather complex thriller that fails to deliver very much suspense or fear, in spite of the requisite shock scenes and mystery over who is perpetrating them. The story opens with a pending marriage, tragically aborted when the groom dies under suspicious circumstances, and continues several years later when Nathalie (Carole Laure), a single mother, receives "breather" phone calls and finds the bloody heart of an animal on her car seat. That is followed by another such donation sent to her workplace and labeled as the heart of her little daughter. Although gruesome, these incidents alone are not enough to create an atmosphere of foreboding, anxiety, or apprehension -- as Nathalie seems just a few steps from unconcerned. If she is not affected, any tension created by the scenario is diffused, leaving the audience in neutral. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

El Sur (The South) is the story of Estrella (Iciar Bollain), a little girl from Southern Spain who has been uprooted to the North. Estrella maintains a sentimentalized attachment to the region of her birth, an attachment manifested in her love for her father (Omero Antonutti). The girl's rose-colored memories are shattered when she learns that her beloved dad once carried on affair with a Southern woman-and that the flames of passion still smolder within him. This Spanish/Argentinian coproduction was filmed on location in Madrid, Navarre, Vittoria, and Zamora. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Robert #1 is played by Charles Denner, while Robert #2 is played by Jacques Villeret. Beyond their common name, the two Roberts are as different as night and day. Oh, there is one more resemblance: both Roberts are lonely, and both hope to meet suitable mates through a computer dating service. As they await the arrival of their new dates, Robert et Robert become fast friends. Of the three favorite film subjects of writer/director Claude Lelouch--romance, crime, and politics--Robert et Robert falls firmly into the first category. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The most outstanding feature of this mystery/drama is the attractive and remarkable voice of Ivan Rebroff, a bass whose performing range spans four octaves. Though many can produce squeaks, squeals and grunts spanning four octaves, untrained singers are lucky to be able to perform using two octaves, and though trained singers occasionally manage to perform using three, only very rarely are singers able to perform with four. Opera lovers will enjoy the singing in this film. Rebroff plays Samson-Sascha, a well-known opera artist, who is brutally beaten by gangsters and suffers from amnesia. Even without his memory, he regains prominence onstage. Eventually, as his memory returns, he is able to search out those responsible for his troubles. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
This uneven drama is an update of the Biblical story of Cain and Abel. Cain returns to his gypsy family after traveling throughout Europe. Abel is a successful businessman with a wife who once had an affair with Cain. Cain kills Abel for absolutely no reason other than he is a drifting anarchist who acts on an impulse. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Under the tutelage of one-time husband, director Roger Vadim, Jane Fonda plays the much-younger wife of stuffed-shirt millionaire Michel Piccoli. When Piccoli's handsome young stepson Peter McEnery comes to visit, Fonda is immediately smitten. When Piccoli forces McEnery into a marriage of convenience, she contemplates committing suicide over returning to her barren but lavish lifestyle. The Game is Over was inspired by the Emile Zola novel La Curee (the film's European title). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Jean Gabin plays Charles, an aging gangster, newly released from prison. In fine Bogart tradition, the unrepentant Charles immediately sets to work planning a major casino heist in Cannes. His go-between for this endeavor is a chorus girl, whom Charles's associate Francis (Alain Delon) beds in order to win her confidence. This rapidly-paced suspenser was based on a novel by John Trinian. When first distributed in the US, the film travelled under the title Any Number Can Win. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Rene Clement's Monsieur Ripois was released in English-speaking countries as The Knave of Hearts and Lovers, Happy Lovers. Relying heavily on voiceover narration and subjective camerawork, the film has Gerard Phillipe in the title role. Believing himself to be love with his wife's best friend (Natasha Parry), Ripois pours out his heart to her by recounting his past amours. Though he has known many women, he has never truly loved any of them. This has proved more troublesome for Ripois than for the ladies in his life, but somehow he never learns his lesson--not even during the film's final scene. British actresses Valerie Hobson and Joan Greenwood are well cast as Ripois' wife and former girlfriend, respectively, while Germaine Montero has an effective cameo as a warm-hearted prostitute. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Famed French actor and singer Fernandel headlines this comedy centered on a case of mistaken identity involving a hapless vacuum salesman. Door-to-door vacuum salesman Casimir has a strange knack for getting himself into complicated situations. After exchanging a series of romantic letters with wealthy South American Angelita, Paul-André has agreed to tie the knot. But now that Angelita is actually coming to town, Paul-André has gotten a paralyzing case of cold feet.
