Infernal Affairs powerhouse Andy Lau and Alan Mak bring the most popular manga in Japan screaming to life in this in this live-action look at the high-speed sport of "drifting" that shot straight to the top of the Hong Kong box office. Eighteen-year-old Takumi (Jay Chou) is never late for a tofu delivery, and though he speeds the tofu to its destinations with the velocity of a landlocked stealth plane, his true aspiration in life is to follow in the footsteps of his formerly fast-driving father (Anthony Wong) -- an ex-adrenaline junkie who eventually gave up the race track for the restaurant business. In his five years delivering meals from his father's restaurant Takumi has learned the streets of his hometown like the back of his hand, and he can take every corner with the needle planted firmly on the right. The trick to Takumi's amazing driving skills is a technique known as "drifting," and in a world where high-risk racing has spilled out of the tracks and onto the streets, this daring driver is about to become a legend. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

With a marvelously convoluted plot and featuring plenty of slapstick action, Chinese Feast is essentially a kung-fu film with a tasty twist: the combatants battle with knives, not to carve each other up but to make exquisite culinary delicacies. The story's impetus comes from a long-standing feud between cooking schools and centers on an upcoming cook-off in which two master chefs compete to present the most delicious version of the Qing & Han Imperial Feast staples -- monkey brains, bear paw, and elephant trunk. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Jeff Lau Chun-wai spins this wild and woolly parody of Wong Kar-wai's martial arts epic Ashes of Time, which was actually produced by Wong himself and features many of the same cast members as Ashes. This loosely plotted film centers around the misdeeds of a pair of royals (Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Veronica Yip) looking to usurp the throne. Also appearing in this film is the bubble-headed Third Princess (Brigitte Ling Ching-hsia) who martial arts ability is dubious at best, a mysterious flying head (Tony Leung Kar-fai), and the dreaded kung fu form "Toad Has a Pee Pee." Because of Ashes' notoriously difficult production, Dong Cheng actually beat the film to the theaters. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

While this is unfolding, bumptious toilet paper salesman Wong Kwok-wai (Kenny Bee) is suffering through a divorce for deciding to leave England, where he's lived for quite a while, and return to Hong Kong to open a factory. David Lai and Corey Yuen spins this unusual -- for Hong Kong cinema -- sci-fi flick inspired in part by Japanese manga. Set in the near future, notorious assassin Silver Fox (Aaron Kwok) is out to avenge his master who was blinded by cop May-chun (Anita Mui). Fox's first attempt manages to kill May's underling Koo, but she herself manages to escape while partially blinding Fox along the way. May-chun goes into hiding leaving her duties to Ching-lan (Andy Lau), who is utterly in love with her. When Ching-lan decides to seek her out, he inadvertently angers the fearsome Pet Lady (Carina Lau). When he does find her, he learns that she has been poisoned by Silver Fox. He takes May-chuan to Pet Lady hoping for a cure. Yet she spurns him, refusing to help even though he crawled through broken glass at her request. All seems lost when Silver Fox attacks once more. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

In 1969, while Hong Kong is undergoing its own localized chaos -- fallout from the Cultural Revolution on the Chinese mainland -- taxi driver Ah-chung is hard-pressed to juggle the two women in his life and his ambition to own his own cab. One of the women is a wealthy socialite who pays for his intimate attentions. The other is his real girlfriend who, despite herself, is drawn to him. What's the problem? The girlfriend is ambitious too: she wants to land someone with real money, not just a hard-working cab driver. One highlight of this light-hearted romantic comedy is its use of music from the period. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Hong Kong director Patrick Tam's Cantonese-language saga My Heart is That Eternal Rose explores the social dynamics and tumultuous life-changes that unfold between two young men who are fast friends - Cheung (Tony Leung) and Rick (Kenny Bee) - and the sexy young woman caught between them, Lap (Joey Wang). Rick and Lap became romantically involved years prior, when Rick worked at a bar owned by Lap's triad-connected gangster father. In time, for political reasons, it became necessary for Lap to put herself on the table as the mistress of Godfather Shen, and Lap inevitably drifted away from Rick while immersing herself in Shen's world. Lap then fell in love with someone else: Cheung, who worked as her driver. Six years pass, during which Rick establishes himself as a hired killer and temporarily loses touch with Lap. The lovers re-encounter one another, and fall back into love, prompting Lap to decide that she wants to leave Godfather Shen; Shen, however, won't let her - which sparks a bloody, tumultuous confrontation between the trio of friends-cum-lovers and Shen's minions. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

This slapstick Hong Kong action film follows the passengers of the Shanghai Express, a train running to the small village of Hanshui. Plenty of action takes place as the gallery of wealthy socialites, con men, cops, and train robbers speeds towards its destination. Directed by Sammo Hung, a master of comedic action and martial arts fight choreography, this film stars Hung, as well as a an all-star cast of Hong Kong favorites, including Yuen Biao, Rosamund Kwan, Richard Ng, and Cynthia Rothrock. Although many films in Hong Kong cinema are associated with low production values, Shanghai period pieces are often executed with a surprising level of consistency, and director Hung has succeeded in this genre on many occasions. ~ Jonathan E. Shanghai Blues combines romantic comedy, slapstick, music, and several classic coincidences (a favorite ploy of director and writer Tsui Hark to tell the story of a man (Kenny Bee) and a female dancer (Sylvia Chang) who meet under a Shanghai bridge in 1937 as they seek shelter from the Japanese bombing of the city. They are immediately drawn to each other and make a pact to meet under the bridge again when the war has ended. But their plans are thwarted and ten years later, the man gets an apartment in Shanghai (where he works as a musician, songwriter, and clown) unaware that the dancer -- for whom he has been searching -- is his downstairs neighbor. Meanwhile, a young, bubbly woman makes friends with the dancer at the club where she performs and inadvertently causes a considerable mix-up that at first looks fated to keep the star-crossed lovers apart. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Kenny Bee is a shy young man whose wealthy parents want him to marry, no matter what. Although he goes to Waikiki with his friend Lolantho (Chen Pai-chiang), neither manage to succeed with women and when they return home, the anxious parents now have another problem: someone is embezzling money from the family's corporate business. In order to flush out the thief, the introverted son poses as Lolantho's chauffeur - and in that guise, the two come across a pair of gorgeous women they met in Waikiki (Cherie Chung and Maggie Cheung - both former Miss Hong Kong title holders). Mix-ups and misunderstandings abound, as well as some dirty-dealing from the suspected embezzler, but love is unerringly true and although Cupid's arrow might be briefly deflected, it ultimately hits the right target. Neither cerebral nor hysterical, this slapstick comedy is likely to amuse viewers of any orientation. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This three-part, typical Hong Kong romantic film features the story of a womanizing husband who leaves his wife (Ching Yi) alone on New Year's eve and when she comes back after a half-hearted attempt to go out and enjoy the evening, she discovers that a burglar is about to rob the place. What better revenge, she thinks, than to seduce the burglar? In the next story, a man (Kenny Bee) refuses to marry the woman he lives with because he feels that marriage undermines the love between a couple. One day his live-in companion comes home to find him with another woman, and so she moves out. After some time with this other woman, the man realizes he loves his long-time companion more than he thought, and maybe even marriage would be tolerable under those circumstances. In the last story, a paraplegic ghost haunts the love affair between a man and a woman, creating a difficult problem to resolve. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

ln this comedy that revolves around the same joke in different guises, a young man (Kenny Bee) is having the hardest time getting married. The day he is to get married in the wedding chapel at the factory where he works, a tipsy reveler accidentally dumps some bathroom cleanser in the large soup pot -- and guest after guest, including the groom himself, have to beg off due to a sudden physical indisposition. From then on, every time the man and his bride try to tie the knot, something goes wrong. In one visually unequivocal incident, the husband-to-be announces that he always has bad luck when a dog appears on the scene -- and sure enough, a poodle trots up and urinates on his wedding slacks. In instances such as that, the humor needs no subtitles. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Originally titled Zhuang Dao Zheng, the mildly satiric The Spooky Bunch takes place in the Chinese city of Cheung Chau. A Cantonese opera company arrives to present a show for the benefit of a wealthy and influentual patriarch. Both the actors and their benefactor are plagued by pesky theatrical ghosts, led by a female spirit whose name cannot be repeated in polite company (it has something to do with feline feces). One of the actresses, Josephine Siao, discovers that the ghosts are seeking vengeance for crimes committed by the patriarch's ancestors. Written with tongue comfortably in cheek by Joyce Chan, The Spooky Bunch received its first non-Chinese showing at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
