This slight multi-national comedy concerns a young Polish woman who becomes engaged to a British doctor in Warsaw. When the doctor leaves the country, the woman travels to London to meet her fiancée and get married. But upon arrival in London she discovers his mother disapproves of the match and the doctor refuses to marry her. Created by Lynda LaPlante, the British TV drama series Widows focused on the wives of three professional criminals, all of whom were apparently killed during a bungled robbery. Taking matters in their own hands, the widows, led by Dolly Rawlins (Ann Mitchell), vowed to finish the larcenous job that their husbands had started, and to wreak vengeance on those responsible for their widowhood. They were joined by a fourth woman, Bella O'Reilly (played first by Eva Mottley, then by Debbie Bishop), who claimed that her boyfriend was also part of the original caper. First telecast from March 16 through April 20, 1983, Widows was followed by Widows II, which aired from April 3 to May 8, 1985. On this occasion, it was revealed that one of the "dead" husbands was still alive, and very insistent that he be cut in on the loot. The subsequent rounds of betrayal and backstabbing culminated in a third series, She's Out. Widows was remade for American television in 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The once-notorious D. H. Lawrence novel Lady Chatterly's Lover seemed like kid stuff by the time this 1981 adaptation hit the screens. To pep up Lawrence's tale of an aristocratic woman who conducts an affair with her earthy gamekeeper, soft-core porn specialist Just Jaeckin attempted to convert the material into Emmanuelle Goes to England. To this end, Jaeckin utilized the undraped talents of his Emmanuelle star Sylvia Kristel, who behaves more like a saloon hall gal than the mistress of an 18th-century manor. Lady Sylvia--er, Lady Chatterly--can't get no satisfaction from her paralyzed spouse, so she dallies with low-born Nicholas Clay. As in most other Just Jaeckin films, the production values and photography are exquisite, the dialogue and acting less so. An earlier, more sedate version of Lady Chatterly's Lover was filmed in France in 1959, with Danielle Darrieux and Erno Crisa in the leads. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Nine years after Jay Presson Allen's theatrical version of the Muriel Spark novel The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was adapted as a film with Maggie Smith in the title role, the property served as the basis for a seven-part British miniseries. Geraldine McEwan starred as Miss Jean Brodie, a highly unorthodox teacher in a 1930s Edinburgh private girl's school. Surrounded by adoring students, Miss Brodie did her best to instill the values of her pet political movement, Fascism, in the hearts of her "gels." Though the heroine was successful in countermanding the orders of her stern and fervently anti-fascist headmistress, she was finally defeated by the sly machinations of one of her students, who mounted a campaign to woo Miss Jean's beau away from her. In the end, Miss Jean's political fervor caused nothing but heartache and tragedy for everyone in her orbit. The TV version of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was shown via the ITV's Scottish Television service in 1978. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
