This comedy concerns the attempts of four different young men who try to lose their virginity. Part one finds a father taking his son to a topless bar to teach him the facts of life. After several drinks, the boy manages to pick up a willing blonde female, but his father's search for sex is thwarted by a marriage-minded female. The second part finds two young virginal teens agreeing to have sex for the first time, but their mutual respect and nervousness prevents them from completing the act. The boy is later initiated by an older woman who owns a car dealership. Part three finds an overweight, self-conscious teenager asking for his friend's help. Invited to a costume party, the boy is fellated by another boy who removes his mask after he is done. The recipient of the sex act is horrified and runs away. The last part finds a perfectly normal man ostracized because he is a virgin. Sent to a psychiatric clinic, he is found to be mentally and physically fit. He picks up a local hooker to change his status and promptly gets venereal disease. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Director Chano Urueta and a top-flight acting and technical crew cannot do much with this comedy about a modern-day Juliet (Elvira Quintana). The Juliet of the title is caught in the dilemma of having to juggle three different suitors, modern-day "Romeos" with their own agenda. Without the Capulets and a Shakespeare to pen the script, the tale remains less than the sum of its talented actors and essential idea. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This is a dramatic, entertaining, and largely fictional interpretation of a very non-fictional event and a real set of characters in the Mexican Revolution. The heroine, Juana Gallo is portrayed by one of Mexico's most famous female leads, María Felix. Gallo was born and raised in the state of Zapatecas, and after the man she loves is killed during the Revolution, her anger leads her to fight alongside the men from her region. Joining her in battle are a noble career military man (Jorge Mistral), a lowly, impoverished fellow (Luis Aguilar), and a humble campesino (Ignacio Lopez-Tarso). Gallo and her compatriots are headed for the climactic battle of Zacatecas, a heroic struggle that is written large across the pages of Mexican history. The actual Juana Gallo died in poverty in 1959. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

There have been several movie versions of this tale written by Marion Crawford in 1909, including this standard Mexican drama directed by Tito Davison. The setting is changed from Italy to Mexico as Angela, a lovely but headstrong young woman rejects the suitor her father has chosen for her to follow her heart and choose a young army officer (Jorge Mistral). When he is called away to war she later hears that he has died in battle and racked by despair, she enters a convent. Soon after she has dedicated her life to the church the supposedly dead army officer shows up on her doorstep, quite alive and well. The dilemma now is excruciating -- should she give up her vows and marry him, or continue with a life she has grown to value? ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This Spanish film was officially inspired by the Prosper Merimee novel (and Bizet opera) Carmen. Instead of working in a cigarette factory, however, Carmen (Sarita Montiel) has become a cabaret singer. She and her lover, Napoleonic sergeant Jose (Maurice Ronet), end up joining a Spanish resistance movement fronted by Antonio (George Mistral), leading to a story marked by tragedy and betrayal, just like the Merimee original. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Two of Spain's leading film personalities - star Carmen Sevila and director Juan Antonio Bardem - pool their talents for La Venganza. The Steinback-like scenario finds Sevila playing the sister of Raf Vallone, a recently released convict. Convinced that one of a group of migrant workers betrayed her brother to the authorities, Sevila insists that Vallone seek revenge. Complications begin piling up when the girl falls in love with the so-called informer (Jorge Mistral). Italian screen goddess Sophia Loren made her American film debut with this glossy romantic adventure set (and partially filmed) on the Greek island of Hydra. Phaedra (Loren) is a female sponge diver who, while combing the waters, discovers the wreckage of a sunken ship with a number of fascinating artifacts, including a statue of a boy astride a dolphin. When Phaedra tells her boyfriend Rhif (Jorge Mistral) about the find, he is convinced that the statue is valuable, and he begins making plans to bring it to dry land for sale. Looking for help, they approach Dr. James Calder (Alan Ladd), an American archeologist working on a project for a Greek museum. Calder wants the statue but can't pay for it -- he wants Phaedra and Rhif to donate it to his museum as a remarkable example of Greek statuary. This is hardly what Rhif had in mind, so he turns to Victor Parmalee (Clifton Webb), a wealthy American art collector intrigued by the statue and other valuables that might be in the ship. Rhif and Victor make plans to salvage the ship's contents and send them back to America, for which Rhif will be paid handsomely. But Phaedra finds herself attracted to Calder, especially after she is disgusted by Victor's blunt offer to make her his mistress, and she begins a romance with the principled American. Now Phaedra and Calder must try to rescue the ship's valuables before Rhif and Parmalee can get to them. The love scenes between Sophia Loren and Alan Ladd presented something of a problem for director Jean Negulesco and his crew -- Ladd was 5' 4" and Loren was 5' 8", requiring him to stand on a box for two shots; for a scene where the two walked together along the beach, the crew dug a trench for Loren to walk in, so Ladd would appear taller. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Le Schiave di Cartegno (Slaves of Carthage) was produced on the super-epic scale that, in the late 1950s at least, was economically feasible only in Europe. Jorge Mistral plays Roman soldier Marc Valerio, assigned to the task of killing off any Christians who cross his path. Instead, he falls in love with Lea (Marisa Allasio), the titular slave of Carthage, who is accused of using sorcery to murder the Roman proconsul. For Lea's sake, Marco casts his lot with the Christians, suffering mightily as a result. Gianna Maria Canale is appropriately wicked as the Roman empress. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Jorge Mistral brings his considerable star power to the murky Mexican melodrama Cabo de Hornos (Cape Horn). Mistral plays the captain of a whaling ship who arrives in port with his pockets full and his heart empty. He meets a pretty, equally lonely bar girl (Silvia Pinal), who for some reason does not appeal to Mistral at all. Even so, he spends the night with her, and the following day takes her with him on his next whaling excursion. The strange, sterile relationship between the two stars is complemented by (symbolic?) stock shots of whales being harpooned and hauled aboard ship by rope. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Director Luis Buñuel constructs this 1954 motion picture on the foundation of Emily Bronte's Gothic novel set in England. However, Buñuel substitutes a Mexican setting for the English one and Spanish names for the novel's central characters. He also alters the plot to heighten tension and maximize the effect of imagery. In the Bronte novel, Mr. Earnshaw rescues a foundling named Heathcliff from the streets and raises the boy at his estate on the moors, Wuthering Heights, along with his daughter, Catherine, and son, Hindley. Over the years, Hindley mistreats Heathcliff, regarding him as a rival for his father's affection. After Mr. Earnshaw dies and Hindley inherits the estate, he humiliates Heathcliff by making him a common stable boy. Catherine, meanwhile, falls passionately in love with Heathcliff, but looks down upon him because he lacks social standing. One day, after overhearing her speak of him disparagingly, Heathcliff abandons Wuthering Heights, then makes a success of himself in the world. After returning three years later, he finds Catherine married to an elegant gentleman, Edgar Linton. Heathcliff vows revenge. First, through clever scheming, he acquires liens on Wuthering Heights and drives Hindley to his grave. To spite Catherine and Linton, Heathcliff marries Isabella Linton, Edgar's sister, and treats her cruelly while gaining control of her property. The turn of events destroys Catherine, who is pregnant, and she dies after giving birth to a daughter. In the Buñuel film, Heathcliff becomes Alejandro (Jorge Mistral), Catherine becomes Catalina (Irasema Dilian), Hindley becomes Ricardo (Luis Aceves Castaneda), and Isabella becomes Isabel (Lilia Prado). Early on, the film generally follows the plot of Wuthering Heights although the setting is a hacienda in Mexico. However, the plot begins to shift when Alejandro discovers that the pregnant Catalina is gravely ill. Full of regret for his past action toward her, he relents and tells her he loves her, and she expresses her love for him. Then she gives birth and dies. After she is laid to rest, he is so grief-stricken that he exhumes her just to hold her one more time. ~ Mike Cummings, Rovi

El Derecho de Nacer was released in English-speaking markets as The Right to be Born. Unmarried and pregnant, a young woman (Barbara Gil) seeks out an abortion. She approaches a doctor (Jorge Mistral), who refuses to perform the operation. Flashing back to an incident in his own past, the doctor explains his "right to life" stance. Adapted from a once-controversial novel by Felix B. Caginet, El Derecho de Nacer states its case with calm forthrightness, never descending to pure tract or dogma. During its initial run in Mexico, the film set a box-office record, a fact as much attributable to the notoriety of the Caginet novel as to the quality of the film itself. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

La Duqusa de Benameji is set in Spain's Sierra Morena mountain regions during the 19th century. The plot is strictly from the bodice-ripping school of fiction, with the titular duchess being captured and then captivated by a dashing robber captain. For reasons that probably made more sense to Spanish filmgoers than to American fans, leading lady Amparito Rivelles plays a dual role, as both the duchess and a fiery gypsy girl. The bandit is essayed by Jorge Mistral, one of Spain's leading matinee idols. Based on a true story, La Duquesa de Benameji is beautifully photographed on location (this is one film that must be seen in its original form, rather than the washed-out prints made available to TV). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
