A single woman envies the security of her married friends, while they in turn dream of her freedom in this comedy drama. Olivia (Jennifer Aniston) is a single woman in her mid-thirties who feels she's reached a crossroads in her life. Unhappy with her career as a teacher, Olivia quits and takes a job as a maid until she sorts out her feelings. However, Olivia feels as if she could use some support, both personal and financial, from her best friends, all of whom at very least have more in the bank than she does. But that's not to say they don't have problems of their own. Christine (Catherine Keener) and her husband Patrick (Jason Isaacs) are screenwriters who have discovered that collaborating is more stress than they can deal with. Jane (Frances McDormand) is married to Aaron (Simon McBurney); they work together as designers, but while their professional relationship is cordial, they've become numb to one another as lovers and friends. And Franny (Joan Cusack) and Matt (Greg Germann) are a couple who comfortably support themselves and their children thanks to an inherited fortune; while their material needs are met, emotionally they can barely handle marriage and parenthood. In this off-the-wall road comedy, John (Ethan Suplee) and Sam (Kevin Connolly) are a pair of close friends who are in need of a vacation, so they hit the road from their hometown of Washington, D.C., to New Orleans, hoping to check out the action at Mardi Gras. Along the way, however, they manage to run over someone with their car; their victim, Tyrone (Coolio), is an escaped convict who dies shortly after the accident. The wreck attracts the attention of the police, and the guys are soon dealing with unfriendly attention from the law, a cadre of drug dealers, and Tyrone's identical triplet brothers, Jerome and Cherone (also played by Coolio). Tensions of a mostly racial nature erupt between two African-American staffers at the ER, the mild-mannered Michael Gallant (Sharif Atkins) and the outspoken Gregory Pratt (Mekhi Phifer). Pratt foments the hostility when he interferes in Gallant's treatment of a suicidal soldier. But when a hypochondriac (Diane Delano) is refused treatment by Dr. Kayson (Sam Anderson) for what seems to be a genuine ailment, Pratt holds his tongue -- with fatal consequences for the patient. Now it is Gallant's turn to unleash his anger at Pratt, a confrontation with long-ranging ramifications. The doctors also try to rescue a woman (Stacy Haiduk) who, though impaled by a shard of medal, is more concerned about the health of her son. Likewise at the scene of the accident, Corday (Alex Kingston) begins to go into contractions; and even psychiatrist Legaspi (Elizabeth Mitchell) makes an appearance when the person who caused the crash is located. Finally, an ongoing story arc is wrapped up as the dying Bishop Stewart (John Cromwell) tries to assuage Kovac's (Goran Visnjic) guilt over "deserting" his family during the Balkan wars. Pastry, Gypsy dancing, and Scott Baio all feature prominently in this independent romantic comedy from Pittsburgh, which focuses on the relationship between three brothers and an elderly Italian couple. Dominic (Baio), Eddie (Billy Mott), and Pino (Shuler Hensley) are brothers who have little in common aside from the bakery they own together. Dominic works for a management firm and specializes in firing people; Pino is mentally handicapped; and Eddie is a womanizer. The brothers are close friends with Massimo and Bella, the Italian couple who live upstairs, and when Dominic learns that Bella is sick, he decides to do whatever he can to make her feel better. This includes a full-fledged attempt to get Massimo and Bella's errant daughter Lucca to come home for Christmas. This being a romantic comedy, it doesn't take long for Dominic to realize that he has other motives for wanting Lucca to come home, motives that don't have a great deal to do with Bella's health. Beautiful Rachel (Megan Ward) is the homebound wife of a wealthy, emotionally cold millionaire, Holden (David Dukes). While Holden is away on one of his many business trips, Rachel's close -- very close -- friend, the equally beautiful Carla (Kristin Minter), plots to kill Holden for the inheritance. With murder on their mind, they seduce simpleton cowboy Travis (Linden Ashby), whom they meet in a bar, and convince him to do their dirty work. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the cunning women, a private eye (John Ratzenberger) hired by Holden to follow Rachel (he suspects her of having an affair) discovers the scheme on the night of the intended murder. Alibis backfire, loyalties are questioned, and more than one murder takes place before the unpredictable ending.
