A special kind of toy is suddenly introduced to the real world around her in this artful fantasy from Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. Hideo (Itsuji Itao) is a middle-aged man who doesn't have many friends, but he wards off loneliness with his companion Nozomi (Bae Du-na), who joins him for dinner each evening and in bed afterwards. But Nozomi is actually an inflatable love doll that can't speak or move on her own -- or she can't until one morning when she discovers she's developed the heart, flesh and soul of a human being. Unfamiliar with the world outside Hideo's apartment, Nozomi tentatively learns to walk, dress herself and venture out into the neighborhood, where she mimics the speech and habits of others. Hideo is surprised when he discovers his "air doll" has come to life, but he soon adjusts to Nozomi's new form. But Nozomi begins learning about the pain and confusion that having a heart can bring when she gets a job at a video store and falls in love with one of her co-workers, Junichi (Arata). As she struggles with her feelings, she seeks out her creator -- Sonoda (Joe Odagiri), the designer who invented the model of doll she used to be. Kuki Ningyo (aka Air Doll) was an official selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the "Un Certain Regard" program. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Chief among these brave officers is Ruka, a sword-swinging dealer of death who has a special knack for dispatching with Key Man's hideous creations. Despite the fact that they operate on opposite sides of the law, Key Man and Ruka have both dedicated their lives to one common goal: seeking vengeance against the crooked cops who killed both of their fathers many years ago. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A young slacker discovers his true purpose in life after falling in love with a knife-wielding beauty locked in an eternal battle against a menacing giant with a chainsaw for a hand director Takuji Kitamura's adaptation of author Tatsuhiko Takimoto popular cult novel. Ever since his best friend died one year ago, Yosuke has been sleepwalking his way through life. It's not that Yosuke lacks intelligence; he just doesn't really see the point in living when life can be taken in the blink of an eye. One night, while wandering the darkened city streets, the depressive Yosuke happens across mournful young beauty Eri. Eri, too, is nursing a painful loss, though she has precious little time to grieve thanks to the menacing giant who falls from the sky determined to carve her up with his enormous chainsaw-hand. It's evident from Eri's arsenal of hidden blades that this is a fairly regular occurrence, and though it's plain to see that she's fully capable of handling the task at hand, Yosuke still can't resist the urge to come to her aid. In helping Eri, Yosuke has finally found something to live for, but why does Eri have to fight in the first place, anyway? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Director Hitoshi Matsumoto weaves this darkly comic mockumentary about a Japanese giant who continues the long-standing family tradition of facing off against Tokyo's most formidable monsters. Constantly caught in the middle of everyone's battles, Daisato finds his sincere efforts to keep the peace repeatedly belittled; he's divorced, his neighbors have covered his house in graffiti, and he gets nothing but dirty looks when he walks down the street. When we first meet Daisato, he is the subject of a television documentary. Though on the surface Daisato may seem like your average, slightly unkempt salaryman -- completely unremarkable in all respects -- it soon becomes apparent just how deceiving first impressions can be. After lamenting on camera the fact that he never gets any vacation time due to frequent calls from the Defense Department, the camera follows Daisato as he rides his motorbike to a Tokyo power plant, receives the jolt of electricity that transforms him into a hulking superhuman crime fighter, and clashes with a gargantuan leviathan intent on destroying Tokyo. Daisato comes from a long line of heroic heavyweights, yet while his ancestors were once championed with parades for their noble efforts, public interest in giant invaders has waned and Daisato has become something of a joke to the citizens of Tokyo. Not only is the noise generated by Daisato's battles regarded as a public nuisance, the property damage that he causes while defending the city has the citizens downright angry. Now, as Daisato attempts to balance his responsibilities to his ex-wife, his daughter, his agent, and his senile grandfather, the crushing weight of both his personal and professional obligations simply becomes too much to bear. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A seemingly normal family turns out to be a hotbed of neuroses in this disquieting drama from Japanese filmmaker Toshiaki Toyoda. The Kyobashis are a cheery and open-minded household where no topic of conversation is considered off-limits for their children, as evidenced one morning when teenage daughter Mana (Anne Suzuki) asks her parents about the details of her conception over breakfast. When Mana learns she was the result of an assignation at an "adults only" hotel in a seedy part of town, she begins hanging out there, sometime picking up men and sometimes simply soaking up the creepy atmosphere. Her brother, Ko (Masahiro Hirota), has been having trouble in school, so his parents have hired a tutor, Mina (Sonim), to help him with his studies; however, Ko has also been having sex with his new study buddy. Father Takashi (Itsuji Itao) is also having an affair with Mina as well as another woman, while his wife, Eriko (Kyoko Koizumi), has a shocking secret that would startle even her own eccentric brood. Kuchu Teien (aka Hanging Garden) was screened in competition at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
