Waiting for Dr. MacGuffin director David Ondaatje takes his love for the "Master of Suspense" to the next logical step with this updating of the 1926 Alfred Hitchcock classic which shifts the action from turn-of-the-century London to contemporary Los Angeles. Adapted from the same Marie Belloc Lowndes novel that inspired the early Hitchcock effort, Ondaatje's thriller follows a mysterious lodger suspected of being a vicious copycat killer. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

This episode is based on a story by Marie Belloc Lowndes, the author of Alfred Hitchcock's 1926 "breakthrough" film, The Lodger. Tyrannical Howard Raydon (Gene Lyons) fires his maid, Addie (Ruth Roman), much to the dismay of Howard's wife, Eve (Anne Francis), who feels that Addie is her only ally against Howard's domineering mother (Gladys Cooper). Vengefully, Addie poisons Howard -- but it is Eve who is accused of murder thanks to the persistence of her hateful mother-in-law. Figuring into the climax of the story is a dark secret harbored by both Addie and her late employer. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

While the silent The Lodger was not director Alfred Hitchcock's first film, it was the first to truly deserve the designation "A Hitchcock Picture". British matinee idol Ivor Novello plays Jonathan Drew, a quiet, secretive young man who rents a room in a London boarding house. Drew's arrival coincides with the reign of Terror orchestrated by Jack the Ripper. As the film progresses, circumstantial evidence begins to mount, pointing to Drew as the selfsame Ripper. In addition to Novello's 1932 remake, The Lodger was remade in 1944 with Laird Cregar, then again in 1953 as Man in the Attic, with Jack Palance as Jonathan Drew. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
