Together with their new neighbor Julie (Haley Bennett), the two curious boys conduct a sequence of experiments in hopes of finding out exactly how deep the hole is, and what lies at the bottom. Christopher Nolan steps back into the director's chair for this sequel to Batman Begins, which finds the titular superhero coming face to face with his greatest nemesis -- the dreaded Joker. Christian Bale returns to the role of Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger dons the ghoulishly gleeful Joker makeup previously worn by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. Just as it begins to appear as if Batman, Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are making headway in their tireless battle against the criminal element, a maniacal, wisecracking fiend plunges the streets of Gotham City into complete chaos. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The tragic aftermath of human carelessness travels around the world in this multi-narrative drama from filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. Richard (Brad Pitt) and Susan (Cate Blanchett) are a couple from the United States who have traveled to Morocco in Northern Africa on a vacation after the death of one of their children has sent Susan into a deep depression. Richard and Susan's other two children have been left in the care of Amelia (Adriana Barraza), their housekeeper. Amelia is originally from Mexico, and her oldest son is getting married in Tijuana. Unable to find someone who can watch the kids, or to obtain permission to take the day off, Amelia takes the children with her as she travels across the border for the celebration. Around the same time, in Morocco a poor farmer buys a hunting rifle, and he gives it to his sons to scare off the predatory animals that have been thinning out their goat herd. The boys decide to test the weapon's range by shooting at a bus far away; the shot hits Susan in the shoulder, and soon she's bleeding severely, while police are convinced the attack is the work of terrorists. In Japan, Chieko (Rinko Kikuchi) is a teenage deaf-mute whose mother recently committed suicide. This despairing, confused girl experiences such rage and frustration that she causes her volleyball team to lose a match, and later yanks her underwear off and begins exposing herself to boys in a crowded restaurant. Chieko's father then struggles to reach past the emotional distance which separates him and his daughter. Babel earned Alejandro González Iñárritu the prize for Best Director at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

One of the first prime-time offerings of the fledgling CW network, Runaway starred Donnie Wahlberg as DC-based district attorney Paul Rader, who in the series opener was framed for the murder of his sexy associate Erin. This and the fact that the actual (and unknown) killer had threatened Paul's teenaged children Henry (Dustin Milligan), Hannah (Sarah Ramos) and Tommy (Nathan Gamble) prompted his wife Lily (Dustin Milligan) to suggest that the Raders go on the lam immediately. After skeedaddling Washington, the family resettled in the small town of Bridgewater, Iowa, where they assumed new identities: Paul became "Jim", Lily "Brenda", Henry "Jason", Hannah "Kate" and Tommy "Mikey." Despite the pressures on the kids, who resented being uprooted from their home and had a lot of trouble establishing new relationships in and out of high school, and even allowing for Lily's inability to keep the family's "backstory" straight for their new neighbors (at first she claimed to be from Philadelphia, only to add the "fact" that she was a Hurricane Katrina refugee!), the Raders adapted to their new surroundings and personalities with relative ease. Alas, Paul began receiving threatening text messages indicating that the villains knew his whereabouts--and just as bad, Bridgewater became the headquarters of inquisitive FBI agent Angela Huntley (Karen LeBlanc). Sort of a "Seventh Heaven Meets The Fugitive", the series was executive-produced by Darren Star (Melrose Place, Sex and the City. Runaway arrived in a state of breathlessness on September 25, 2006. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
