Con artist James Jarvis (Richard Johnson) has made a comfortable living posing as an investment counselor in order to bilk wealthy old women. Jarvis' current target is elderly Mary Crawford (Fay Bainter), who lives with her friend Agatha (Geraldine Fitzgerald). There's no love lost between small-town busybody Bessie Carnby (Lillian Gish) and her neighbors Henry and Samantha Wilkins (Peter Lind Hayes, Patricia Cutts) -- nor does Bessie's daughter, Camilla (Maggie McNamara), make a secret of her dislike for the mousy Henry. Eventually, Bessie decides to bury the hatchet and pays a visit to the Wilkinses -- and in the process, comes to the conclusion that Samantha has murdered Henry and disposed of his body. Thanks to Bessie's persistence, Samantha is arrested, convicted, and executed. Only afterward does Bessie learn the whole truth -- and this time, it looks as though justice will not be done. Middle-aged shopkeeper George Davies (Dean Jagger) is responsive to the flirtations of local "fast girl" Lola (Cathy Merchant) -- but when Lola mocks him, he strikes her down and accidentally kills the girl. Later on, Lola's boyfriend, J.J. Fenton (Will Hutchins), is arrested for the murder...and George is chosen to serve on the jury. At first pondering the possibility of allowing Fenton to be accused of the crime that he himself committed, George instead devises a method to get the boy off without incriminating himself. Out of favor with his client, the Holdwell Safe Corporation, ad executive Harrison Fell (Robert Webber) desperately concocts a spectacular publicity stunt to prove the efficiency of the new 801 Burglar-Proof Safe. To this end, he hires retired safecracker Sammy Morrissey (Paul Hartman) to attempt to rob the safe, offering the man a prize of 50,000 dollars. But Sammy balks at the prospect, arguing that he is now in another line of work...and despite his criminal past, no one can accuse Sammy of telling a lie, as proven by the ironic outcome of the episode. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Riding into a wild-and-wooly frontier town on Christmas Eve, Paladin (Richard Boone) befriends a young cowboy and pregnant woman who need his help. It seems that the couple cannot find anyone willing or able to provide them lodging for the night; in fact, the only available space is a squalid storeroom behind the saloon. Sound familiar? Paroled after serving 20 years for robbery, Harry Beggs (Crahan Denton) returns to his hometown, hoping to patch things up with his wife, Edith (Jeanette Nolan). Harry has managed to save 1,636 dollars during his sentence, and with this he hopes to jump-start his life. Unfortunately, he meets a sexy young girl (Susan Silo) at a bar -- and by the time he leaves, his money is gone. Newly hired at a private school, teacher Laura Siddons (Wendy Hiller) suspects that one of her students, a girl named Gloria (Gigi Perreau), is having a clandestine romance. Laura and her gentleman friend, Ben (Robert H. Harris), eventually catch up with Gloria and confirm their suspicions: the girl is not only in love, but also married!
