Vittorio Mezzogiorno Movies

Acclaimed and popular Italian actor Vittorio Mezzogiorno is best remembered for playing the Mafia-beleaguered police commissioner in chapters five and six of the long-running Italian miniseries The Octopus. Prior to appearing in this series, he had appeared in numerous Italian and European films and had established himself as a respectable theatrical star. Mezzogiorno learned his craft on the Neopolitan stage and periodically returned there through the 1980s. He loved the stage so much that, in 1984, he undertook a four-year hiatus from films and television to tour Europe in British director Peter Brooks' production of the East Indian epic Mahabhanrata. He would subsequently appear in the film version (he made his feature film debut in the mid-'70s). Mezzogiorno was able to bring disparate groups together and quickly gained a reputation for his versatility. His most acclaimed films include Tre Fratelli and Il Giaocattolo (both 1980). ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In modern-day Paris, a cabalist known as the Maharal has created a golem, an artificial being constructed of earth and clay, infused with spirit through the recitation of a special formula. The legendary being he brings to life is known in this instance as "The Spirit of Exile," and the magician's goal in creating her was to create a protector for Jews in need of one. In this movie, the golem is motivated to assist numerous people whose lives are marked by tragedy. In the main story, she must try to help Shemesh, a woman whose many troubles cause her to resemble the Biblical character of Job. She has been evicted from her home after her husband and sons die, and she and her daughter-in-law must find some means for surviving their difficult situation. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Werner Herzog's cinema of obsession (Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo) has always owed some of its emotional expressionism to the post-World War I genre of German mountain films (The Blue Light, The White Hell of Pitz-Palu), in which German mountain climbers are compelled to scale the heights of dangerous mountain peaks, achieving a form of purification and superiority. It was inevitable that at some point Herzog would tackle a mountain. Finally, with Cerro Torre: Schrei Aus Stein, he does. Donald Sutherland stars as Ivan, a journalist who instigates a rivalry between Roccia (Vittorio Mezzogiorno), a professional mountain climber who has braved the highest mountain peaks in the world, and Martin (Stefan Glowacz), a champion athlete of indoor climbing walls. But Roccia doesn't need a reporter to fuel a rivalry between the two, since Katharina (Mathilda May), Roccia's lover, is attracted to Martin. Ivan arranges for a TV special chronicling the efforts of Roccia, Martin, Katharina, and Ivan to conquer the peak of the unconquered Cerro Torre granite tower in Chile. Roccia keeps postponing the climb until finally Martin heads off to climb Cerro Torre by himself, accompanied only by a television crew. But the result of that journey causes Roccia to avoid the press, while Martin is greeted with skepticism. This unhappy response to their initial attempt causes Ivan, Roccia, Martin, and Katharina to confront the formidable peak again for a final confrontation with the silent mountain. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

This unusual film looks at the issue of rape from the male point of view, in particular one man's nightmare of being unfairly accused of the crime and having no recourse against the accusations of a persuasive "victim." In this drama, a student finds herself locked in a museum after closing time with a man who has arranged for that to happen. He indicates his interest in having sexual relations with her, and she appears willing each of the times they have sex -- even to the point of complaining when he leaves prematurely. Afterwards, he is surprised to be hauled into court on a charge of "rape without force" and convicted. However, his is not the nightmare vision being considered -- the prosecutor who has won his case begins having nightmares, especially after his girlfriend takes the side of the man he prosecuted. Despite some oddities in the acting, this film won a Silver Bear at the 1991 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The last days in the life of fascist Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and his family are told from the point of view of his ill-fated son-in-law Galeazzo Ciano (Anthony Hopkins) in this crammed, two-hour historical biography. Originally filmed as a four-part miniseries, the two-hour reduction leaves a very speeded-up view of the time between the Allied landing in Italy and Mussolini's death. As events worsen for the dictator (shown shuffling around in slippers at home like a domesticated pet) he begins to lose his support, including that of his son-in-law Galeazzo. After the German army frees him from a brief detention by Partisan forces, the dictator orders Galeazzo's execution. Italy has obviously lost the war, but Mussolini seems to be living in his own small world. Susan Sarandon plays Mussolini's daughter and Galeazzo's wife, Bob Hoskins is the dictator, and Barbara De Rossi is Mussolini's doomed mistress, Claretta.

Filmmaker Jean-Jacques Beineix followed up the surprise international success of his first feature, Diva, with this stylish but downbeat drama. Gerard (Gerard Depardieu) is a dock worker who becomes an emotional wreck following the rape and suicide of his sister. As his relationships with his girlfriend Bella (Victoria Abril), his drunken brother, and his depressive father begin to decay, Gerard becomes obsessed with finding the man who attacked his sister and spends most of his nights lurking about the scene of the crime. In time, Gerard makes the acquaintance of Loretta (Nastassja Kinski), who cruises by the waterfront every evening in a red sports car. Desperate to pull himself out of his emotional doldrums, Gerard becomes involved with Loretta. Bella, however, is not at all happy about this, and she convinces a pair of strong-arm men to teach him a lesson. Gerard must now decide if he wants to be with Loretta or Bella, just as he's discovered evidence that may reveal who raped his sister. La Lune Dans Le Caniveau received uneven reviews on its initial release and won a French Cesar Award for its production design. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A newspaper editor begins to fume over the fact that a Citroen is constantly parked in his reserved space, but when he finally meets the owner of the car, she is so attractive that he ends up leaving his wife and family and going after her -- even following her into Yugoslavia. This premise might be a little hard to accept for some viewers, especially since the newspaper editor's motivation seems shallow. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Director Carlo Lizzani left behind his typically political interests in favor of pure sex and violence in this convoluted thriller. A married woman selling the title carpet, which a Persian legend holds to be yellow only to highlight the color of blood, is visited by an older man while her husband is out. What follows is a labyrinthine tangle of incestuous urges, poisonings, psychosexual sadism, drug abuse, and torture. Despite having been filmed for television, this bizarre film -- based on a play by Aldo Selleri -- is quite graphic. Perverse sexual situations and knifepoint torture abound, while at one point a syringe is stabbed into an eyelid in close-up. Erland Josephson, Beatrice Romand, Vittorio Mezzogiorno, and Milena Vukotic lead the talented cast. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

This entertaining, light comedy is carried on the shoulders of Nino Manfredi, who plays a gypsy coffee vendor illegally selling expresso on trains. Inventive, creative, and needing to stay several steps ahead of the conductors and other bureaucrats out to shut down his operation, the cafe artist often finds himself hiding out in the most unusual places. He needs the money because his young, asthmatic son needs medical attention. That fact casts no shadow on the comedy though, as the coffee vendor continues to dodge his pursuers toward what must surely be an upbeat ending for all concerned. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
