A Jewish Mafia-like family is running a prostitution ring, selling "protection," and operating gambling casinos -- more or less with impunity, and at peace with their Arab counterparts -- until a young gangster (Bernard Giraudeau) decides to pit the two ethnic factions against each other. Jewish cultural and religious events are celebrated by the Jewish gangsters, who promote family traditions -- in contrast to the police inspector who has no family and is out to do them all in. Focusing on the Jewish mob boss, the story has him undergoing some personal rehabilitation in the end. Actually, comparing the merits of ethnically and religiously different mobs of gangsters might be a little like comparing the respective beauty of a pair of week-old corpses. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This atypical adventure film from cult director Jesus Franco was based on a story by Jules Verne. Jose Manuel Marcos portrays 15-year-old Dick Sands, whose lifelong dream is to be a sailor like his godfather, Adm. Marlowe (Edmund Purdom). Marlowe gets Dick a job as a cabin-boy on a ship commanded by Captain Hull (Marc Cassot), who is charged with taking the Admiral's wife Clara (Doris Thomas) to America. Hull and the crew are killed during a whale hunt, leaving young Dick to captain the ship, which is soon taken over by Negoro (William Berger), a slaver posing as a cook. Dick must escape and help the passengers before they are sold into slavery in Africa. Howard Vernon, Fernando Bilbao, and Luis Barboo co-star in this ludicrous adventure. The action scenes are laughable, the acting is inept, and Marcos is woefully miscast in the lead. Versions run 86, 90, and 105 minutes. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

L'Etrange Monsieur Steve (The Strange Mr. Stevens) features Armand Mestral as the title character. It is bank robber Mr. Steve (or Stevens) who introduces mild-mannered bank clerk Georges (Philippe Lemaire) to the criminal viewpoint. Fascinated by Mr. Steve's dangerous lifestyle, Georges vicariously lives his own life through the crook's activities. As a result, he leaves himself wide open for the tragedy that follows. Jeanne Moreau offers the film's best performance as a gun moll who temporarily casts a spell over the susceptible Georges. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Emile Zola's obscure novel entitled "L'Assommoir" has been made into several films. This is one of the best. In this two hour movie an entire mini-series worth of problems have been compressed about a young woman to whom life has dealt hard blows. Set in the 19th-century, this woman deals with an alcoholic husband while doing everything within her power to keep the family together. An incredibly depressing movie in which the protagonist keeps on trying no matter what besets her, the performances are creditable and the direction superb. Self-involved characters give viewers no one to cheer for, but this movie received multiple awards, ranging from Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival to an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film. The music was composed by Georges Auric. ~ Tana Hobart, All Movie Guide

Showing no signs of slowing down in his 70th year, Sacha Guitry served as director and writer of the lavish historical epic Napoleon, and also costarred as Talleyrand. It is now hard to assess the quality of the film, since most American prints are severely edited, and the color photography appallingly washed out. Reviewers in 1955 admired the effort that went into this $1,800,000 production, but complained that the viewer left the film with no deeper understanding of Napoleon Bonaparte than the viewer had had when coming in. Daniel Gelin poses impressively as the young Bonaparte, registering emotion only when things go wrong in his conquest of Europe, while Raymond Pellegrin is somewhat better as the older, more jaded Napoleon (the transition between the two actors is handled in a near-comic fashion). The Revolution is reduced to a few fleeting scenes, while the rest of the film is devoted to political infighting and betrayal. The huge supporting cast includes Michele Morgan as Josephine and Lana Marconi and Dany Robin, respectively, as Napoleon's mistresses Waleska and Desiree. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
