In 1941, those who had remained around too long to completely escape the Nazi blitzkrieg had one small, slim chance to escape persecution. They could travel to Marseilles and attempt to get the servile but still nominally independent government of Vichy France to grant them an exit visa. Then they could take passage to safer climes on one of the neutral vessels that stopped there. This drama, based on a novel by Anna Seghers, follows the fates of a small group of desperate people who are attempting to do just that. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this German comedy, the Robin-Hood theme receives an entirely new spin. A gourmet tramp, a bankrupt film producer, an aspiring actress and a low-ranking tax inspector join forces to improve their lives and those of others by blackmailing the officers of a large phony charity into donating money to the one they have set up. How these disparate people get together is at least as interesting as the sting operation itself. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Gotz George portrays the unscrupulous police commissioner Schimanski in this grim crime drama. With his partner Thanner (Eberhard Feik), the two shake down patrons of a techno dance club in the drug-drenched Ruhr district, and there Schimanski recognizes a drugged-out dancer as Conny (Claudia Messner), the daughter of an old flame. He sets out to help Conny, now calling herself Zabou, escape from a situation that she has no desire to leave behind. Wolfram Berger portrays the oily club-owner Hocks. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

The award-winning Austrian film Welcome in Vienna unfolds a true story that has long been shunted aside by military historians. The film concerns those Austrian and German immigrants who fought with the American forces during World War 2. Specifically, the story deals with Austrian Jew Freddy Wolff (Gabriel Barylli) and German intellectual Adler (Nicholas Brieger). Wolff must contend with the anti-Semitism of his German-American sergeant (Joachim Kemmer), while Adler is ideologically drifting towards communism. The shock of meeting old friends on the "other" side and of finding that their homes no longer exist as they remember them are only some of the additional challenges faced by the two protagonists. Upon its first release, Welcome in Vienna stirred up a small controversy by suggesting that the Austrian people were not merely the helpless victims of Nazi tyranny, but were as responsible as any individual "fifth columnist" in helping Hitler overwhelm the rest of Europe. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Gabriel Barylli, Nicolas Brieger, (more)
