Explained and demonstrated by the renowned Moira Stott-Merrithew, these exercises focus on the toning of abdominal and back muscles to relieve or avoid pain caused by an imbalance between muscles. The Stott Conditioning method is a trademarked updating of the system of low-impact mind-body exercises developed during WWI and refined in 1920s New York by German-born physical trainer Joseph H. Pilates (1880-1967). The original Pilates system (pronounced puh-LAH-teez or pi-LAH-tis) attracted a number of famous disciples early on, including dance immortals Martha Graham and George Balanchine. However, it wasn't until the 1990s that its popularity increased exponentially. Pilates exercises resemble yoga and dance, emphasizing stretching, precision movements and postures, and focused breathing, but unlike yoga, much of the work is performed with exercise devices. However, for this video, only an exercise mat is needed. The Stott method claims to incorporate a more modern understanding of body mechanics. Developed by Stott-Merrithew, a former professional dancer, the Stott system is intended to promote strength and flexibility without adding bulk. Proper technique is crucial to attaining the desired results, and Stott-Merrithew recommends using the videos as a supplement to training with a certified instructor. ~ Steve Blackburn, All Movie Guide
This is the first program in a series of Stott videos designed to be done on an exercise mat. The renowned Moira Stott explains and demonstrates basic breathing techniques, positions, and moves that will also be utilized in the intermediate and advanced videos in this series. Although designed for beginners, the routines require a certain level of flexibility. Moira Stott has created a flex band workout program that allows students to concentrate on keeping a number of different muscle groups properly toned. Though many viewers are interested in mastering the exercise techniques and movements originally designed by J.H. Pilates that fully shape and tone their abdominal muscles, others feel strongly about incorporating moves that work many other muscles as well. While using a flex band, students can not only work on the proper breathing and body alignment required for toning up their abs, they can also work toward strengthening their biceps, pecs, and triceps. The video also includes special routines to work the leg muscles. ~ Elizabeth Smith, All Movie Guide
Moira Stott, former professional ballet dancer and certified instructor of Joseph H. Pilates' techniques, introduces a variety of challenging movements and routines in this program. After Stott reviews the proper breathing techniques and reminds students of how they should align their bodies, she demonstrates several of the most basic Pilates exercises. Students at the advanced beginner or early intermediate stages of abdominal exercise training are likely to gain the most from this video. ~ Elizabeth Smith, All Movie Guide
Like other Stott Pilates training programs, this one emphasizes the importance of strengthening all of the abdominal muscle groups and not just the outer ones so often targeted by generic workout routines. Students are instructed to concentrate on contracting their abdominal muscles as they repeat various exercises and attempt to gracefully move their bodies into the same positions demonstrated by the instructor. Viewers will need to have already built up significant strength in their torso in order to generate the stamina and endurance required by this program. Additional routines also work the thighs. Moira Stott provides the cues that should allow intermediate-level students to easily follow along after a few practice sessions. ~ Elizabeth Smith, All Movie Guide
Instructor Moira Stott explains the various exercises and routines as her assistant Beth Evans demonstrates them for students. The emphasis is on slow yet deliberate transitions from various positions that often begin with the student lying flat on the mat and then raising their legs upwards, keeping with Evans' movements. Students will need strong back muscles as they move into and out of a "jackknife" position and other more complicated routines. The greatest emphasis is placed on helping students target their deepest abdominal muscle groups while challenging themselves to make their body movements in a deliberate yet graceful fashion. The arms and legs are also worked regularly as posture and timing help students master each routine. ~ Elizabeth Smith, All Movie Guide
Advanced Pilates students may want to try out this exercise video designed by Moira Stott. As many viewers already know, Stott first danced professionally with the City Ballet of Toronto and England's Ballet Rambert before deciding to study J.H. Pilates' basic exercise techniques and workout philosophy. After becoming certified in this form of training, Stott and her husband opened their first Stott Pilates Studio. In this video, Stott provides instruction in the proper breathing and body alignment required for the mat exercises. Those who have already worked with Stott's Essential Matwork and Intermediate Matwork will recognize many of the introductory routines that are incorporated into these more advanced movements requiring considerable abdominal muscle strength. Students are encouraged to practice until these routines flow into one another without noticeable transitions. Viewers will see that the Stott approach to Pilates exercises emphasizes building strength and endurance. ~ Elizabeth Smith, All Movie Guide

Family Pictures is a two-part TV adaptation of the Sue Miller novel of the same name. Anjelica Huston and Sam Neill are Lainey and David Eberlin, a 1950s married couple with six children, one of whom, Randall (Jamie Harrold), is autistic. The parents' initial decision not to institutionalize the boy results in a terrific strain on the rest of the family, until finally only Lainey is willing to shoulder the responsibility of raising Randall. The second half of Family Pictures, related from the vantage point of the 1980s by the Eberlins' oldest daughter (Kyra Sedgwick), details the effect that Randall's inevitable institutionalization had on the family. This anecdotal four-hour drama first aired on March 21 and 22, 1993. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
