On another planet, love is bad for the environment, so aliens come to Earth in search of bad relationships in this sci-fi-themed comedy. Things are not well on the planet Zots; it seems the humanoids there give off a gas when they're in love that has an adverse effect on their ozone layer, and for the sake of the survival of the planet, people have to stop being so happy. In hopes of finding a way to reverse this process, an exploratory force of three women is sent to the planet Earth, where research suggests most folks are heartbroken and miserable. Zoinx (Susan Ziegler), Zylar (Jackie Monahan) and Barr (Cynthia Kaplan) set out to find love that will go wrong, and Zoinx is the first to hook up, meeting Jane (Lisa Haas), a cheerful lesbian who works at a greeting card shop that a magnet for eccentrics. Despite Zoinx's odd behavior, Jane is happy to be in a relationship, which is good news for her but not so hot for Zoinx. Meanwhile, Zylar and Barr discover love with one another, which also doesn't fit the program, while all three Zotsians are tracked by a pair of American intelligence agents (Dennis Davis and Alex Karpovsky). Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same was the first feature film from writer and director Madeleine Olnek. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A recent college graduate keeps stumbling as she steps out into the real world in this independent comedy drama. Aura (Lena Dunham) has just graduated from a university in the Midwest, receiving a degree in film theory that even she seems to realize is essentially worthless. With no real prospects she returns home to her mother, Siri (Laurie Simmons), a successful photographer living in New York City. Aura's 17-year-old sister, Nadine (Grace Dunham), is about to graduate from high school and is choosing which college to attend in the fall; Aura is ostensibly back home to help Siri and Nadine during a hectic time, but they don't appear to particularly need or want her assistance. Aura befriends Jed (Alex Karpovsky), a minor celebrity thanks to his surreal YouTube videos, who insists he's in New York to take meetings for an upcoming TV project; he soon invites himself into Aura's bedroom as a semi-permanent guest, though he clearly has no interest in any sort of romantic or sexual relationship. With little else to do, Aura takes a job at a nearby restaurant and becomes smitten with Keith (David Call), one of the cooks; while he seems attracted to her, he also has a girlfriend and it isn't until they're both stoned one night that he makes his move in a rather unusual setting. Tiny Furniture was written and directed by Lena Dunham, who also plays Aura; Laurie Simmons and Grace Dunham are her mother and sister in real life as well as in the film, which was mostly shot in Simmons' actual apartment. The film was named Best Narrative Feature at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A man looks for a way to get even with the sibling who has stolen away the woman he loves in this independent comedy drama from writer and director Bryan Poyser. Paul (Alex Karpovsky) and Rudy (Chris Doubek) are brothers who are also both writers, though their careers are on opposite ends of the spectrum of success; Paul has authored a series of fantasy novels for kids that have made him a very wealthy man, while Rudy's bitter and more personal work makes no inroads into the marketplace. Rudy is envious of his brother's good fortune, in part because he helped him come up with the characters for his stories when they were children. Rudy does have one thing that Paul wants, however -- Rudy's wife, Diana (Heather Kafka), who is disenchanted with her husband's dour attitude and money troubles and wants a divorce. After Diana finally kicks Rudy out of their home, he's reduced to living out of his car until Paul takes pity on him and pays for an extended stay at a hotel. What Rudy doesn't know is that Paul has given him a place to stay so he can invite Diana on a getaway to a luxury ski resort in Utah. Once Rudy catches on that Paul is seducing his ex-wife, Rudy makes his way to Utah and sneaks into their chalet, following their movements as he plots his revenge. Lovers of Hate received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival -- fitting, since Poyser shot the Utah sequences in Park City while attending the Sundance Festival in 2009 (using the bungalow where he and a number of other Austin, TX filmmakers were staying as the set for Paul and Diana's love nest). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this typically low-key comedy drama from independent writer/director Andrew Bujalski, Jeannie (Tilly Hatcher) and Lauren (Maggie Hatcher) are a pair of twin sisters living in Austin, TX, who are close without having much in common. Jeannie, who is confined to a wheelchair, runs a well-established vintage clothing store called Storyville with her longtime friend Amanda (Anne Dodge), while Lauren drifts from job to job and is pondering an offer to teach English in Kenya. Jeannie and Amanda have had a falling out and Jeannie is worried about her stake in the business, especially since the original partnership agreements were drawn up by Amanda's father. When Amanda suggests she may take legal action to take full control of Storyville, Jeannie decides she needs legal advice and turns to Merrill (Alex Karpovsky), a former boyfriend who has almost completed his law degree. Merrill is feeling frazzled as he tries to pass the bar exam and he welcomes the distraction, but it isn't long before he forgets one of the first rules of legal ethics and begins sleeping with Jeannie. Lauren, meanwhile, wants to be of assistance to her sister, but she gets roped into helping her mother with her myriad problems while trying to make sense of her own future. Improvisational comedy is a medium in which most performers are lucky if they come up with five or ten minutes of material that's effective on a given night. Then there is the team of T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi, a pair of actors and comedians who began working together at Chicago's legendary Second City improv company. Jagodowski and Pasquesi regularly perform as a duo in New York and Chicago, where they spontaneously create hour-long shows that display the fragile art of improvisational theater at its best, generating characters and narrative arcs with a skill few in the medium can match. Filmmaker Alex Karpovsky offers a look into the unique working relationship of Jagodowski and Pasquesi and their approach to improvisation in the documentary Trust Us, This Is All Made Up, which includes plenty of footage of the pair on-stage as well as profiles of the actors in their off-hours. Trust Us, This Is All Made Up was an official selection at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The elusive Ivory Billed Woodpecker was officially declared extinct in the 1940s, so could recently reported sightings in the Arkansas bayou have any foundation in fact? As busloads of fanatical birdwatchers descend upon a small Arkansas town in hopes of being the first to find evidence of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, amateur birder/poet Johnny Neander remains certain he'll be the one to confirm the bird's existence. Meanwhile, the search intensifies, pitting the believers against the skeptics and pitting local environmentalists against scheming entrepreneurs. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
