Martha Beck (Shirley Stoler) is a lonely nurse who takes care of her invalid mother in Mobile, Alabama. Starved for affection, she places an ad in a lonely hearts column and soon receives a letter from Ray Fernandez (Tony LoBianco). He meets her and runs off with her dowry to New York City. Martha puts her mother in a nursing home and follows the handsome con artist. She agrees to pose as his sister as the two fleece lonely, unsuspecting women out of their money. Martha's jealousies of Ray's victims leads to murder. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, an elderly matron is killed and her child is drowned in a washing machine. Martha considers confessing to the police when she finally realizes Ray will never be true to her or any other woman. The story was taken from actual events, and the real-life couple were eventually executed in Sing Sing prison in 1951. The black-and-white photography adds an aura of authenticity to the documentary-style production. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

You'll be shocked, amazed, and maybe just a little bit creeped out by the things you can find in your newspaper's classified ads in this vintage sexploitation "mockumentary" from Joel M. Reed. Psychologist Dr. Joanne Ridgefield (Georgina Spelvin) serves as host and guide to this exploration of the sexual netherworld, which can be accessed through discreet ads placed in "underground" newspapers and on public bulletin boards. Through Dr. Ridgefield, we meet voyeurs looking for good peeping spots, homosexuals on the cruise for new partners, masked swingers clubs, nudie photographers trolling for naïve new models, a man who makes a good living providing S & M enthusiasts with leather gear, adult film societies screening stag movies for heavy-breathing fans, and "Lonely Hearts Clubs" preying on unsuspecting bachelors looking for relationships with teenage girls. Director Joel M. Reed (who would later make the bizarre horror-comedy Bloodsucking Freaks) and actress Jennifer Welles (a major star in 1970s adult films) can be spotted in cameo roles. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this drama, a young circus performer begins looking for his long-lost mother after his father dies. He finds the eccentric woman living alone in a big house in a small town. Her only companion is a dwarf who acts as her valet. The trouble begins when a wealthy citizen in town begins wanting the old house to give to his spoiled son. Just before the place is to be auctioned off to pay back taxes, the young son arrives and pays the debt. This angers the locals. They sic the town thug upon him and mayhem ensues. The poor hermitess is then assaulted by a drunken group of youths who suddenly show up at her house. The old woman is so frightened that she has a fatal heart attack. After she dies, the son loads her corpse into his circus truck and begins slowly driving to the town cemetery. The remorseful townsfolk follow behind. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
