This musical biography of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (Torval Maurstad) is based on the play of the same name. Living in poverty after graduating from a music conservatory, Grieg scandalizes his family by marrying his cousin Nina (Florence Henderson). Grieg has an affair with a former schoolmate, Therese Berg (Christina Schollin), a wealthy woman who makes a deal with her influential father to end the romance if he'll arrange a concert for Grieg in Stockholm. Grieg eventually travels to Rome, where his significance as an artist begins to find appreciation. His association with Therese is not really finished and Grieg's humble piano, a gift from the self-sacrificing Nina, is overshadowed by Therese's gift of a grand piano. In this Swedish feature, the bright and colorful carnival atmosphere of Rio is contrasted by life in the neighboring town of Niteroi. The poor town festers with poverty, prostitution and hopelessness and serves as a gathering place for derelict alcoholics who jump ship from many countries. The characters are plagued by tremors, illness and personal and moral degradation as they live out the rest of their miserable lives waiting for their inevitable demise at the hands of demon alcohol. Pappila (Bibi Andersson) tries to collect a $3,000 reward from the Swedish consulate for the safe return of one of the poor unfortunates who is near death in this depressing film. A routine film about how difficult it can be to finally grow up, this story revolves around the emotional ups and downs of Jacob (Torval Maurstad) who comes back home after spending years at sea -- symbolically and otherwise. Jacob falls in love with Line (Margarethe Robsahm), but not even this positive relationship can erase his hatred for his now-ailing father. The man tormented both him and his mother, driving her into a mental breakdown. Jacob has written the novel the world is waiting for, and so when his usual turmoil over his past with his father is exacerbated by a rejection from the publisher, his reaction is off the scale -- taking him to the brink of disaster. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
